MY FIRST 1800's SILVER and it's tiny!!! My 2nd oldest coin ever!

December must be my lucky month. Last year I dug the Spanish silver piece of eight reale, and today I FINALLY dug my first ever 1800's silver. This is also my 2nd oldest coin EVER! I hit the plantation house at lunch today, and started detecting the back horse pasture. It is all overgrown now that the horses are gone. There is one path that has been mowed so I started detecting it. I got an iffy signal and dug about 6". In the pile of dirt I saw a tiny silver coin. :o I knew it was too small to be a Barber or Merc, so I immediately thought "Spanish silver". :icon_scratch: I gave it a quick glance and could tell it wasn't a reale , but had no idea what it was. :dontknow:
Since I don't normally find really old coins, and I saw an "1833" and "5C" on it, I was really stumped. ???
When I got back to work I hit the internet (PCGS site) and discovered I had dug an 1833 Capped Bust Half Dime!!!
FINALLY I had dug my first 1800's silver. This along with finding a dated LC were two of my goals for 2008. I still haven't found that elusive LC yet. :-\ This 1833 Half Dime is my 2nd oldest coin ever.
Even though the coin is holed, I am overjoyed to have found a coin this old. The scratch on her cheek was there from before too.
I think holed coins actually have more character than non-holed. It shows that this tiny coin really had some value to someone back then.

Here are a few videos from my find today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6Z6AbdiOdA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcpxYO1BYFw

My finds were:

*1833 Capped Bust Half Dime

*Gold (?) and Diamond (?) earring- found in plantation yard

*Buggy or Carriage step

*Wm. Roger's & Son spoon - Dated Aug 21, 17' (1917)

*Asst'd buckles

*Pottery shard

Thanks for looking & have a great weekend,
MM

GREAT FIND

Thanks Cru. ;D
This coin made my day. :icon_sunny: I'm half temped to plow that field myself now. ;D
Mirage found his half reale in the other horse pasture earlier this year. I've been finding a lot more things (this tiny silver, jewelry, V-nickels) now that I stopped using too much discrim. It has really paid off for me. Makes me wonder what all I have missed over the years. :icon_scratch: Oh well.
Thanks & good luck this weekend.

I too have turn down the discrim on my latest fields & it helps (half way between min & iron). I never go much above the iron setting on the Cortes.

Re: MY FIRST 1800's SILVER and it's tiny!!! My 2nd oldest coin ever!

WOW! MM, you deserve that one, buddy. That is a Solid coin find--and ya know, don't worry about the hole. Folks on this forum treat coins like they expect to dig up a numismatic treasure. They complain when they dig a holed or cut coin, and then they go and Field Clean and Polish every silver they find. ::) Well, to folks then they were money. And money that they didn't want to lose. :) That's a beauty of a coin there.

I dug a "problem coin" today too. But I wouldn't take a million bucks for it. Been a good many years since I found one.

So Bravo to you, Doug. Keep it up!

-Buck

P.S.--Tsk Tsk rubbing that silver in the video before you had it ID'ed. :-X

Re: MY FIRST 1800's SILVER and it's tiny!!! My 2nd oldest coin ever!

Way to go, Doug!!  :wav:

What a super-sweet find! I had to laugh about not knowing what the old coin was. I'm like you. Until I started detecting and reading T-Net posts, I had never heard of Barbers, standings, walkers, V's and all the rest of them. :icon_scratch:

Oh, and I'm with you on the holed coin philosophy.

Way to go!!! :icon_king:

Thanks Chris. You find old copper though that I can only dream of. I have 3 weeks left to meet my other goal for 08' of finding a dated LC.
Good luck in 09'. I'm sure there will be a half dime out there soon for you.

Thanks Jerry.
I had no clue what I found as you could tell on the video. It didn't help that I didn't have my glasses on either. ;D
I knew it was a U.S. coin though when I saw the "United States of America" on it. I saw the "5C" on it and thought..."how can this be a nickel being this small." :tongue3:
I learned a new coin today. I love the coins that you can't identify.
