MY FIRST 1800's SILVER and it's tiny!!! My 2nd oldest coin ever!

December must be my lucky month. Last year I dug the Spanish silver piece of eight reale, and today I FINALLY dug my first ever 1800's silver. This is also my 2nd oldest coin EVER! I hit the plantation house at lunch today, and started detecting the back horse pasture. It is all overgrown now that the horses are gone. There is one path that has been mowed so I started detecting it. I got an iffy signal and dug about 6". In the pile of dirt I saw a tiny silver coin. :o I knew it was too small to be a Barber or Merc, so I immediately thought "Spanish silver". :icon_scratch: I gave it a quick glance and could tell it wasn't a reale , but had no idea what it was. :dontknow:
Since I don't normally find really old coins, and I saw an "1833" and "5C" on it, I was really stumped. ???
When I got back to work I hit the internet (PCGS site) and discovered I had dug an 1833 Capped Bust Half Dime!!!
FINALLY I had dug my first 1800's silver. This along with finding a dated LC were two of my goals for 2008. I still haven't found that elusive LC yet. :-\ This 1833 Half Dime is my 2nd oldest coin ever.
Even though the coin is holed, I am overjoyed to have found a coin this old. The scratch on her cheek was there from before too.
I think holed coins actually have more character than non-holed. It shows that this tiny coin really had some value to someone back then.

Here are a few videos from my find today:

My finds were:

*1833 Capped Bust Half Dime

*Gold (?) and Diamond (?) earring- found in plantation yard

*Buggy or Carriage step

*Wm. Roger's & Son spoon - Dated Aug 21, 17' (1917)

*Asst'd buckles

*Pottery shard

Thanks for looking & have a great weekend,
MM

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm staying away from that brand. ;D
I was watching the movie series "John Adams" last night and they stepped out of the carriage onto one of those steps. It was kind of neat to know that I actually have one of those old steps now.
I kept looking at the large Colonial buttons on the outfits too. ;D

MM, that is a beauty of a coin. The hole just adds intrigue to it. If that coin could talk I'm sure it would tell a fascinating story about how and why the hole was made and what impact it had on the unfortunate person who lost it.

Great find - a true piece of early American history !!!!!

Good luck with finding that large cent. I'm sure there's one out there waiting for you !!!

Thanks Brian.
I'm glad you feel the same way. These are the kinds of finds I like digging. The ones with meaning & history behind them, like the CW relics.
Have a great weekend.

Doug,
Thanks for the heads up. Very sweet coin. :icon_sunny:

Amazing how that pasture looks now. So overgrown.

Your persistance paid off. So many people give up on places. Only time to give up on a place is when you have hunted it multiple times over different seasons. It's amazing how humidity, rainfall and temperature effect detecting.

You are so right about the effects of weather on a place. I find stuff in that yard we hunted still.
I'll always remember you digging that reale that day.

HB,
The first hole I'm going to dig is a hole under the covers. I need my beauty sleep & rest so I can dig those other 58 holes in the morning. Two old house spots lined up. "Come on LC!".
Congrats on your recent find. Can't wait to see it after the electrolysis.
