MY FIRST 1800's SILVER and it's tiny!!! My 2nd oldest coin ever!

December must be my lucky month. Last year I dug the Spanish silver piece of eight reale, and today I FINALLY dug my first ever 1800's silver. This is also my 2nd oldest coin EVER! I hit the plantation house at lunch today, and started detecting the back horse pasture. It is all overgrown now that the horses are gone. There is one path that has been mowed so I started detecting it. I got an iffy signal and dug about 6". In the pile of dirt I saw a tiny silver coin. :o I knew it was too small to be a Barber or Merc, so I immediately thought "Spanish silver". :icon_scratch: I gave it a quick glance and could tell it wasn't a reale , but had no idea what it was. :dontknow:
Since I don't normally find really old coins, and I saw an "1833" and "5C" on it, I was really stumped. ???
When I got back to work I hit the internet (PCGS site) and discovered I had dug an 1833 Capped Bust Half Dime!!!
FINALLY I had dug my first 1800's silver. This along with finding a dated LC were two of my goals for 2008. I still haven't found that elusive LC yet. :-\ This 1833 Half Dime is my 2nd oldest coin ever.
Even though the coin is holed, I am overjoyed to have found a coin this old. The scratch on her cheek was there from before too.
I think holed coins actually have more character than non-holed. It shows that this tiny coin really had some value to someone back then.

Here are a few videos from my find today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6Z6AbdiOdA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcpxYO1BYFw

My finds were:

*1833 Capped Bust Half Dime

*Gold (?) and Diamond (?) earring- found in plantation yard

*Buggy or Carriage step

*Wm. Roger's & Son spoon - Dated Aug 21, 17' (1917)

*Asst'd buckles

*Pottery shard

Thanks for looking & have a great weekend,
MM

Re: MY FIRST 1800's SILVER and it's tiny!!! My 2nd oldest coin ever!

MM, Glad to see something like this turning up in NC. There is hope for us all here to find some of the older stuff.

I was talking to a older person who grew up on a farm around here and she told me that, "We just didn't have money." "We grew everything we needed and traded what we grew for stuff that we didn't have like salt and sugar."

I have detected several old houses that you would think you could find at least an Indian Head penny laying around the front porch area and have come up with nothing but clad and an occasional wheat penny.

Best strike I have made quantity wise is where I think the children must have stood waiting for the school bus. I found a lot of pennies, dimes and nickels in a 5' X 10' area right by the road in front of the house. House built around 1920 and the oldest coin I found was a 1942 penny where the cloths line used to be.

Keep up the good work and keep posting, it helps charge up my batteries.

If you're going to break into the 1800's, you might as well do it in style, and you did! Like you, I'd never seen, or even heard of, a half dime until I dug my first. I was privileged to dig my second a few minutes later. You'll never forget finding that little beauty!

Re: MY FIRST 1800's SILVER and it's tiny!!! My 2nd oldest coin ever!

Excellent half dime, Doug! Congrats on finding one classy 1800's coin. Your carriage step is sweet, too.

Keep digging!

Thanks Dimeman. I know it was a rare find for me. ;D It took all year.
I haven't tested the diamonds yet because the gold wasn't stamped anywhere. I figure it is probably just costume Superman jewelry. ;D

Thanks for having faith in me CBB. (Capped Bust Brother) ;D
Sometimes I start getting disgusted at the plantation property thinking I found everything good there is to find, and then another little suprise pops up. In this case a VERY little suprise. ;D
The owners are doing some plumbing & electrical work on the house right now and there are a bunch of those new clay (?) drain sewage pipes line up to be put in soon. I can't wait to hit that area once they dig up the soil to lay those.
I'm serious about heading up to MD with you guys in 09'. Hopefully you can handle my humor. :icon_jokercolor:
Thanks Joe.

Thanks Big Dan.
I had no clue what kind of coin it was. I saw "5C" and thought maybe a Mexican coin. :icon_scratch: Then I saw "United States of America" and got a very large grin. ;D I was going to screan outloud with job, but I didn't want the owners thinking I struck gold. ;D
I'm so glad I had my camera on me.
