MY FIRST 1800's SILVER and it's tiny!!! My 2nd oldest coin ever!

December must be my lucky month. Last year I dug the Spanish silver piece of eight reale, and today I FINALLY dug my first ever 1800's silver. This is also my 2nd oldest coin EVER! I hit the plantation house at lunch today, and started detecting the back horse pasture. It is all overgrown now that the horses are gone. There is one path that has been mowed so I started detecting it. I got an iffy signal and dug about 6". In the pile of dirt I saw a tiny silver coin. :o I knew it was too small to be a Barber or Merc, so I immediately thought "Spanish silver". :icon_scratch: I gave it a quick glance and could tell it wasn't a reale , but had no idea what it was. :dontknow:
Since I don't normally find really old coins, and I saw an "1833" and "5C" on it, I was really stumped. ???
When I got back to work I hit the internet (PCGS site) and discovered I had dug an 1833 Capped Bust Half Dime!!!
FINALLY I had dug my first 1800's silver. This along with finding a dated LC were two of my goals for 2008. I still haven't found that elusive LC yet. :-\ This 1833 Half Dime is my 2nd oldest coin ever.
Even though the coin is holed, I am overjoyed to have found a coin this old. The scratch on her cheek was there from before too.
I think holed coins actually have more character than non-holed. It shows that this tiny coin really had some value to someone back then.

Here are a few videos from my find today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6Z6AbdiOdA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcpxYO1BYFw

My finds were:

*1833 Capped Bust Half Dime

*Gold (?) and Diamond (?) earring- found in plantation yard

*Buggy or Carriage step

*Wm. Roger's & Son spoon - Dated Aug 21, 17' (1917)

*Asst'd buckles

*Pottery shard

Thanks for looking & have a great weekend,
MM

Wicked awesome find buddy! Huge congrats are in order for you...

Still thinking about how that coin got "holed" - looks more like it was pierced to me. Possibly a bayonet wound?
(trying to add some drama to your story ;D) From the front of the coin, the shape where the hole breaks through looks like a heart (cue in the spooky music) - way cool - I'd definitely be holding on to that coin...

WOW! MM, you deserve that one, buddy. That is a Solid coin find--and ya know, don't worry about the hole. Folks on this forum treat coins like they expect to dig up a numismatic treasure. They complain when they dig a holed or cut coin, and then they go and Field Clean and Polish every silver they find. ::) Well, to folks then they were money. And money that they didn't want to lose. :) That's a beauty of a coin there.
I dug a "problem coin" today too. But I wouldn't take a million bucks for it. Been a good many years since I found one.
So Bravo to you, Doug. Keep it up!
-Buck

P.S.--Tsk Tsk rubbing that silver in the video before you had it ID'ed. :-X

Thanks Buck.
"Tsk Tsk rubbing that silver in the video before you had it ID'ed" Sorry buddy, I was so excited to find out what it was I got carried away be rubbing it a bit. ;D

I wouldn't trade this old tiny holed coin for anything. Although it's not pretty or in great shape it had great value to someone back then.
I'm thinking maybe a slave on the plantation. :icon_scratch: ???
Also, I was wondering what they used to hole the coin with. :icon_scratch: It's not a nice round hole, so maybe a knife point?
I am considering buying a gold bezel for it and wearing it myself. This one to me ranks up there with one of my best & proudest finds to date.
I'll be back out MDing at a few old homes tomorrow. I still need an LC before 08' ends. ;D
Thanks Buddy,
Doug

Way to go, Doug!!  :wav:

What a super-sweet find! I had to laugh about not knowing what the old coin was. I'm like you. Until I started detecting and reading T-Net posts, I had never heard of Barbers, standings, walkers, V's and all the rest of them. :icon_scratch:
Oh, and I'm with you on the holed coin philosophy.
Way to go!!! :icon_king:
Neil

Thanks so much Neil.
I'm like you with coins too. I learned a lot of terms here on TN. I used to say I don't care if it's seated, walking, standing, or squating, I just want to find one! ;D
Next year I'll have to add a half dollar and silver dollar to my goal list. Those large silver coins amaze me when people find them.
Have a great weekend.

I don't know if this tiny thin coin may have stopped a bayonet, but I like your imagination. :tongue3: Maybe the hole was made by David Bowie throwing his famous Bowie knife. :icon_scratch: :tard: :icon_jokercolor:

Sorry I called you at work today when I found this half dime, but I had to tell someone!
Where in the heck did you find that beer ad? Now I'll have to find one on E-bay. I love it!!! ;D
Good luck tomorrow.

Ty,
Thanks for the great compliment. Maybe in 09' I can make it up to MD with you & Joe. I'll have to stop by and visit The Iron Brigade too. I have to say I MD'd in Virginia at least once in my life. My Northern neighbors always find the good stuff. ;D

Congrats on the half dime Doug, it took me many years to find my first one, and it was frustrating watching my son find quite a few years before I ever got one, in fact his first silver coin from the 1800s was an 1835 Half Dime, I think he was about 14 years old at the time and using a White's TR unit, but hey, he found it, I think I got my first one about 20 years later, or at least it seemed that long!

Sweet! Isn't it awesome to find a coin that old...well...you admitted in your video that you found Spanish silver, but the 1836 half dime that i found this summer is my oldest. Big congrats, maybe there's some other sweet stuff in there...looks like a decent-sized area to cover. Good luck!

Thanks Jgas. I'm not sure if I'll be able to beat an 1833 coin, but I'll give it my best next year. ;D

Thanks so much Don. I had heard about and seen some of these pop up on TN, but I never thought I would ever find one. I love being surprised like this. That's why this hobby is so great.
I had only gridded this particular pasture off once when it had horses in it and no grass or weeds. Today I happened to hit it at a 90 degree angle from my first time. Between that and turning down my disrim a bit, I'm sure that helped me a great bit. I've learned not to pass over those iffy signals and it's paying off for me. The recent V-nickels and bracelet in a well worked over area is even more reassurance to myself that I'm doing something right now.
Have a great weekend Don.
