W@W this was a long time coming! My post was going to be completely different than this one...until the last hole dug this morning, After 3 hours of swingin' the coil I had just 7 wheaties. Don't get me wrong I'm very happy with that because I hunt only areas that have been pounded for 30 plus years. I was going to post just that..my 7 wheaties and how I was happy to have popped them out of the pounded ground..and that how many times I'll come home after 3 to 4 hours with only a few wheaties and NO silver. Then it happened! I ran the coil over the last 3 feet of ground between the ground and where it changes to gravel. I got a nice high flutey hit and it read like silver. I didn't get overly excited because 3 or 4 of the wheaties had caused the crosshairs to peg like silver too. Anyway I dug down about 5" to 6" and popped out wheatie #8 and thought.."okay I will post these and explain how silver doesn't always pop out".
I gave the hole a quick double check with the probe as always...and BINGO...another coin in the hole! I got a solid pegged high hit that was definately silver about 2" deeper in the hole which was gravel at this depth. Now I got excited so I carefully dug down around the center of the hit as to not damage my silver dime that was sure to pop out. I pried at the last part of the circle of hardened soil/gravel mix and this big beauty plopped right up and out like a fish jumping out of water. I said "Holy Sh%*"..."that ain't no dime" (Before you ask.....the answer is yes... I was talking to myself!) I couldn't help it because this was honestly the last thing I expected to pop out. I was totally shocked as this site has been hit for 30 years and this is the first Walking Liberty Half that I have ever pulled out.I didn't even rub the dirt off yet because I wanted you all to see exactly how it came out of the nasty gravel soil. Man I LOVE this hobby!

very pretty, walkers are my all time fav. half ever made, congrats ;D

Just great!I would love to find one.Congrats

Great job! Love finding those Walkers!

Outstanding!

Many 50-cent pieces crossed my hands in the 50's when I was an urchin. Sure haven't found one lately (a guy showed me a '41 Walker today at the VFW).

I hope to find big hunk of silver like that next season. WTG..

I know the feeling. What a rush. Talking to yourself when finding a nice one is probably done by 90% of here. I know I do. Well done.

Wow, Bryce, what a rush to see that big silver come out of the ground!!

You know, I've said the same thing to myself when going to some of my heavily hunted sites, "just a few wheaties and I'd be happy...". Those types of finds come up when you least expect them to. What's the date of the Walker? You know, I found one of my walkers this year in a similar fashion. I was nearing the edge of a cliff/drop off, and was just about to give up and turn around, when "Bam", I get a nice deep silver hit. Thinking a silver dime, and then completely excited to see the big silver pop out at 6". I think this is a great lesson to us to try and cover every inch of turf/ground possible at our sites....good finds can come up just about anywhere.

Congrats on your first Big Silver of the year, bud!!
Thanks Dan. It's a 1936 and was definately the most unexpected find of the year thus far for me. This was the "nobody wants to dig here" area because it takes 15 minutes to get even a small plug chipped out of the nasty hard ground. Once you do get a small plug chipped..then then is the gravel mixed in.

That is good stuff! I have not found any silver in a couple of weeks but the wheatys are flowing like wine. I have never found a half but would love to!!
If you're finding wheaties then the silver is sure to come. Keep on diggin'.

What a big, beautiful hunk of silver! That and the Merc dime were (IMO) the last coins the US minted that had such classic beauty.
It's been a while since I have dug a Walker.
Great hunt.

Bryce,

Keep after them with that small coil!!! You never know when 9 or 10 silvers will pop out of a 20x20 area again!!!!

Dream
That's very true. There is still a lot of stuff there in between the garbage or underneath it, etc.

Thanks Mike. I was hoping I wasn't the only one who did so. I've found lots of goodies in my 30 years of hunting (started at 14)...but this was only my 2nd Walker.

Thanks Danimal. It had been a few years for me. I like the mercs to and they are one of my favorite coins.

Wow. I haven't had that pleasure yet. In fact I haven't found silver yet but i hope to soon.

Silverfreak, congrats bro.......that is a rare find and a beautiful coin. I know exactly what you mean when thinking about what you're already going to post when out in the field. I do that in my mind also.......and BTW, the first silver rosie I dug this past monday, the first words coming out my mouth were "Oh s&#t", as I wasn't expecting it. This was a great read also, very well presented.
