W@W this was a long time coming! My post was going to be completely different than this one...until the last hole dug this morning, After 3 hours of swingin' the coil I had just 7 wheaties. Don't get me wrong I'm very happy with that because I hunt only areas that have been pounded for 30 plus years. I was going to post just that..my 7 wheaties and how I was happy to have popped them out of the pounded ground..and that how many times I'll come home after 3 to 4 hours with only a few wheaties and NO silver. Then it happened! I ran the coil over the last 3 feet of ground between the ground and where it changes to gravel. I got a nice high flutey hit and it read like silver. I didn't get overly excited because 3 or 4 of the wheaties had caused the crosshairs to peg like silver too. Anyway I dug down about 5" to 6" and popped out wheatie #8 and thought.."okay I will post these and explain how silver doesn't always pop out".
I gave the hole a quick double check with the probe as always...and BINGO...another coin in the hole! I got a solid pegged high hit that was definately silver about 2" deeper in the hole which was gravel at this depth. Now I got excited so I carefully dug down around the center of the hit as to not damage my silver dime that was sure to pop out. I pried at the last part of the circle of hardened soil/gravel mix and this big beauty plopped right up and out like a fish jumping out of water. I said "Holy Sh%*"..."that ain't no dime" (Before you ask.....the answer is yes... I was talking to myself!) I couldn't help it because this was honestly the last thing I expected to pop out. I was totally shocked as this site has been hit for 30 years and this is the first Walking Liberty Half that I have ever pulled out.I didn't even rub the dirt off yet because I wanted you all to see exactly how it came out of the nasty gravel soil. Man I LOVE this hobby!

Thanks Panz. It was a rush allright. I just about filled my britches.

Wow, Bryce, what a rush to see that big silver come out of the ground!!

You know, I've said the same thing to myself when going to some of my heavily hunted sites, "just a few wheaties and I'd be happy...". Those types of finds come up when you least expect them to. What's the date of the Walker? You know, I found one of my walkers this year in a similar fashion. I was nearing the edge of a cliff/drop off, and was just about to give up and turn around, when "Bam", I get a nice deep silver hit. Thinking a silver dime, and then completely excited to see the big silver pop out at 6". I think this is a great lesson to us to try and cover every inch of turf/ground possible at our sites....good finds can come up just about anywhere.

Congrats on your first Big Silver of the year, bud!!

She is lovely, especially since she's the first! Congrats, the thrill never goes away; after a dozen or more silver halves, it's still exciting to pluck another.

Now THAT'S a big silver! Still waiting for one of those myself :) Congrats! It should clean up real nice!

Great job on the half dollar!

:o BAM, that's a waker upper for sure. Congrats, congrats, congrats! She's a real beauty ;D HH

Nice find - congrats :)

Congratulations! I was showing a friend of mine how to use his new detector and his first hit was a silver half. I was super jealous of him since that was the first thing he dug and I have been digging for five years and the halves have still eluded me to this day, so a big CONGRATULATIONS!

i got excited just reading the story ! man what a sweet find :o congrats on the silver ;)

Bryce,

Keep after them with that small coil!!! You never know when 9 or 10 silvers will pop out of a 20x20 area again!!!!

I know exactly how you fell, I went through it yesterday, finding my first Walking Liberty Half. Awesome, awesome awesome. Keep pounding to ground.

Very nice!

Not many of this were lost. They were too easy to spot on the ground.

Congrats!
