***My first coin in the woods!!! Nice 23' Merc. ***Better pix added ***

I went to my farm spot at lunch today. I ventured into the woods to detect. It's nice and cool now with no mosquitoes and hopefully no snakes . :o I dug a big chunk of lead close to where I found the musket ball a few weeks back. Then I dug a large wood splitting wedge by one of the dry stream beds.
My best find today by far though was my first old coin found in the woods since I've been MDing this farm! It's not a large cent, Barber, King George coppa, or even a Boy George coppa, but it is:
1) My first coin found in the woods,
2) A needle in the haystack (164 acres),
3) Silver.
It may be only a 1923 Merc to some, but it's about 20 years older than the Mercs I've found up around the farm house. This to me is a good sign.
I had a slight signal up next to a small tree sapling. I thought for sure it would be another shotgun shell head, but at about 8" deep, the Mighty Tesoro found this little gem! ;D
I've been dying to find a coin in the woods, and I finally have one. Ya-hoooo.
Thanks for looking,
MM

Thanks everyone. I know it's only a Merc, but I'm still jazzed that I finally got a coin out in the woods. The great thing is....it wasn't clad either! ;D
You can bet I'll be digging any slight signals out there now. Come on 1800's!!! ;D

WTG on the Merc, maybe there's more coins in those woods.

And if you ever find a Boy George copper let me know :D

Nat

Nat,
If I ever find a Boy George "coppa" I better be on Kirk's top 25. ;D
Thanks,
Doug

Why not use Photoshop to make one? ::)
Then you will be on the list.

Sweet Merc. You can tell that baby was dropped in the 1920's. I found one just like it. There was an IH close by. ;D

Was the Merc just in the middle of no where? Usually there is something to relate to it. It's not very often(unless it was a campground) that I just find coins in the "middle of the woods".

keep hitting those woods. If there's a path or glass bits or lots of iron, there could be more!

Re: ***My first coin in the woods!!!*** Ya-hoo*** Wedgy too.

Hey, Doug, so you finally found that merc I planted in those woods. ;D Now you have to find the walker I placed there too....seriously, I know how good it must feel to finally hit a coin in areas such as you detect. When I detect off old trails(thats my woods here) near highly populated parks, it really feels good to strike silver. I know there's bound to be more there.

Congrats,

Cool Merc, MM! Great detail on it.

It's neat finding things "in the middle of no where". Search that spot again, there's got to be more.

I like the log splitter too. It looks well used.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dan. The only "walker" I found today was ME. ;D If it's out there, I'm going to find it. It may be 50 years, and me using a "walker", but I'll find it. ;)

Now you can check that one off your list! Congrats!

Thanks RTDE3. You're right about that. Now if I can just find a few really old silver coins, I'd be one happy camper.

Thanks Paul. I did a no-no and cleaned and polished the Merc last night. It's not a key date, so no big deal. This coin really does have a lot of nice detail to it. It is way sharper than the ones in the 40's that I find. It came out very nice and shiny. After seeing how nice Danimal and Mirage's coins come out when polished up, I had to try it. ;D

great looking merc!!!!!!!!!!

Re: ***My first coin in the woods!!!*** Ya-hoo*** Wedgy too.

That is one beautiful merc!

Re: ***My first coin in the woods!!!*** Ya-hoo*** Wedgy too.

Gotta love hunting woods Doug. Especially if it's raining.

Any chance of a good closeup of the reverse on the Merc? I agree with the others. REAL strong sharp details. Congrats.

Re: ***My first coin in the woods!!!*** Ya-hoo*** Wedgy too.

Woods hunting is best in the winter time also. Cuts down on the wind and the ground freezes later due to the canopy cover. Nice Merc. :)

Nice find anywhere!

Dan,
Here are some better pictures of the 23' Merc. I have shined it up and put it in a holder, but you can see the detail. I have no idea about grading coins, but if I go by the grading scale in my Red Book, I would say it is an EF-40 which states "Diagonal bands show only slight wear. Braids and hair before ear show clearly."
Sounds about right doesn't it? What grade would you give it?
I know one thing, this is the most detailed Merc I've ever found. Way better than the ones in the 1940's I keep getting. ;D
Thanks,
Doug

AU at least before cleaning... hard to tell what it looks like under the magnifying glass though...I'd say probably net XF is about right after cleaning.
