***My first coin in the woods!!! Nice 23' Merc. ***Better pix added ***

I went to my farm spot at lunch today. I ventured into the woods to detect. It's nice and cool now with no mosquitoes and hopefully no snakes . I dug a big chunk of lead close to where I found the musket ball a few weeks back. Then I dug a large wood splitting wedge by one of the dry stream beds.
My best find today by far though was my first old coin found in the woods since I've been MDing this farm! It's not a large cent, Barber, King George coppa, or even a Boy George coppa, but it is:
1) My first coin found in the woods,
2) A needle in the haystack (164 acres),
3) Silver.
It may be only a 1923 Merc to some, but it's about 20 years older than the Mercs I've found up around the farm house. This to me is a good sign.
I had a slight signal up next to a small tree sapling. I thought for sure it would be another shotgun shell head, but at about 8" deep, the Mighty Tesoro found this little gem!
I've been dying to find a coin in the woods, and I finally have one. Ya-hoooo.

Nice coin MM. It's a real rush finding a good coin where you weren't expecting to find one. I've only found one coin in the woods. It was a wheat penny that somebody used for target practice.

Quite a fine Merc there, to boot! Some of the NICEST strong striking detail on the wings and edge of the cap. Now tell me...is there an "S" mintmark on that Puppy? If so, you've got a strong $100 coin, EVEN if it gets knocked down a few points for scuff marks.

I thought it had very sharp detail, but didn't want to brag since I don't know much about coin grading. It is very sharp on both the front , back, and edge.
I looked in my coin book, and was hoping for an "S" mint mark too.
The book said a "D" mint mark would be a counterfit if it had one.
Unfotunately, this one has no mint mark.
Oh, well.

You are so right! What a rush. Finding a "woods" coin was my goal this year. I'm still trying for on into the 1800's though.

I almost didn't dig it. I knew I had to get back to work, and was swinging quickly as I walked back. I happened to hear the faint signal next to the sapling. Since I had my larger shovel with me, I decided "what the heck", and went for it. It was deep, but the dirt is like butter now. Yaba-daba-doo!
