There is a Ball Park in my Community that go's back to the 1950's and over the years I have dug the heck out of it. I was there digging my 2000th pull tab when it hit me that maybe I needed to give the tabs a break. I looked across the road and noted a house that I had always longed to swing the detector over and made the brave decision to do that very first door knock. After all I have seen the success others on this forum have had with it and told my self that I was going to march across the road and Knock on that Door! I had just seen a truck pull in so I knew someone was home.
Going across the road with all my gear a tow I marched up to the door and Knocked. After a few longs seconds the door opened and a Very Drunk man answered With a curt Who are you? I replied that I was a local Guy and my Hobby was Metal Detecting and I enjoyed recovering local history. He replied with "At least you Got Nerve enough to ask" and said go ahead. I did and he watched me very carefully for a while and replied "show me what you found before you leave". The yard was trashy but I soon found a Lincoln cent and a nice Hot wheels car. He appeared out of nowhere and wanted to see what I found and I pulled them out of my Garrett Pouch and handed them to him. He retained the Hot Wheel and handed the penny back. I thought he just wanted to look it over so I kept swinging and soon had another hot Wheel car in the bag. Again the showed up and wanted to know what I had in the bag and again I handed him a Hot wheel and another Lincoln which he stuck in his pocked saying "whatever is in my yard is mine and I want to see what's in that pouch before you leave"' I looked at him I guess with some surprise and replied that your yard has too much junk in it and I was leaving NOW! I preceded to start across the yard and he replied "I want to see what you got in that pouch before you leave!" Well those of you who use this Garrett Pouch know that it has a second zipper pocket for you to put the good stuff in and the junk go's the large pouch. Well I had a Silver Dime and a three ringer in the small pouch that I had found earlier I didn't want this idiot to think was his so I just unbuckled the pouch belt and preceded to dump all the junk I had collected on his yard and said "Here you Go" and started across the road. As I crossed the center of the road he Hollered "Yea, What the Hell do you GOT in your pockets"? I just keep walking shook my head and under my breath said Damn Drunks anyway. Its got to get better.

My regrets on the bad door knock experience. Personally, I have zero tolerance for drunks. When he answered the door drunk, I would have said, "sorry, buddy - wrong house", then moved on down the side walk.

I had one of those permissions, The home owner was towering over me when I dug every plug. :BangHead: The deal was we'd split everything 50/50 (the only time I ever agreed to this) :dontknow:. After about 20 minutes the guy left and asked me to put his share on the porch. :icon_thumright: Soon after he left I found out both his back and side yards were full of hot rocks (I hate hot rocks!!!):BangHead:. I put all my finds on his porch, to include trash and left. I had dug less than a dollar in clad and only hunted for about 45 minutes.

Don't stop knocking, but I rather catch the owner outside and strike up a conversation in order to feel them out a little before or even if I pop the question. I have done some cold knocking, it's a roll of the dice, but as they say "nothing ventured, nothing gained" It's similar to the first time you asked a girl to dance back in junior high school. Some yes, some no, and some you wished you'd never asked. :tongue3:

Who knows if you kept going you could have found that gold ring
WITH HIS WIFE STILL ATTACHED... LOL most people I would think would not be like that sorry don't give up cause of one XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Omg...u kill me! Lmao...don't ever stop...I needed that after the day I had...thx ddf..

I do have one more response to this. If there is the occasion someone asks what the split is, I tell them its 50/50 but please have your garbage bag ready for your 50% of the garbage so I dont have to haul it around the rest of the day !! This usually brings a good laugh, and they head into the house without bothering me on the rest of my outing. Of course, say it with a sense of humor.

Well, there is another side to this.

In very early '84 I was living and working in Monroe, MI and accepted a position in Perry, OH. More money, so off I went.

At work one day, a co-worker came in to work really PO'd. He'd heard noises outside and went out to see a fellow digging targets in his yard, leaving the trash lay and leaving the holes open. He confronted the fellow and got cussed out. His own yard.....

Just goes to show that it works both ways. We have to live and operate honorably and above suspicion.

I'd dump the pouch of all dug items and walk away. I returned a class ring one time, the guy grabbed it out of my hand and said he thought he'd lost it and walked away. Not one word of thanks.

Humans come in all flavors! That's why we still have wars. We have to resist the urge of capital punishment!

door knocking is very risqué, In my area. knocking on some ones door to tell them you want to dig up any valuables in their yard is bold to say the least just wont work here, bad enough trying to hunt a curb strip.im in Miami fl.

First off you never mention or even hint of the word valuables when you ask for permission. When people ask what do I think I'll find in their yard I say maybe a few coins, a harmonica reed, possibly a few hot wheels, nothing worth much. It's a great day if I dig a skeleton key and maybe a pre-1965 Roosevelt dime or a wheat penny.
