We often go detecting late afternoon in the hot Summer and that's just what we did yesterday afternoon. We have permission to hunt two different tear down sites in Nashville, along the battlefield lines and have been watching the properties and sure enough, both houses were down by the end of the afternoon. We headed to one that had a huge back yard and ll I turned up was a small rectangular buckle,a few clad coins so we decided to move on to the other site just for a few swings of our coils before pitch black dark. The mister took the back yard and I the front and the first swing of my coil yielded a stupid iron pipe. I decided to try softer looking dirt and got a really good hit but couldn't see what I was digging and got my LED light that goes on my head. I knew that the mister was ready to go soon but that sound the target made was just to sweet to pass up and not dig. Whatever 'it" was had small roots on top so I tried to gauge where I could pop up whatever it was with my small digger. Out pops a US breastplate! The lead backing was the side showing but I immediately knew what it was before I turned it over. The irony is that my husband dug one last week, his first also. Mine has better details but the iron hooks that were there leached out and it has a few red stains on it. Needless to say we are going back today for more goodies.
