Minelab Equinox 800, Fisher F70, Pro-Pointer
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
My dad and I both bought detectors in 1982. We hunted a lot for two years and then life got in the way (marriage, home, children, etc.). The detectors went into hibernation. I recently was bitten by the detecting bug again and purchased a F70. With snow on the ground all I could do was read about what everyone else was finding and watch You Tube videos. We finally got some good weather but I was down with the flu all week. Today I had enough. I had to get out so I grabbed my gear and went to the local school. My first two signals were coins; a nickel and dime. Not bad. Picked up a few more coins and then I dug another signal. It turned out to be a coin spill with quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies. I'm sorry I didn't keep track but there must have been at least $1 in one hole. My only good find was a 1940 Wheatie. Kind of pales in comparison to the multiple silver finds back in the day but I'm not complaining for the first time out. $1.54 in beer money.

Welcome back. You see a difference in detecting since the early 80's? I always want to hear stories about detecting back then.

Thank you Slasher. It's good to be back. I plan on hitting a park very soon where I found most of my silver in 1982. My detector back then was a Teknetics 8500 and I was digging silver even though I saw others detecting there (don't remember what they were using). The 8500 was a great detector in its day but I can see where a fast recovery detector like the F70 will be able to find things not possible before. For example, I put a Merc and pulltab several inches apart on the ground. The 8500 would give one solid beep as it was swept across both targets. The F70 gives two beeps; one high and one mid-range.

I found my Craftsman garden digger did a fine job (I didn't break it) and with additional things I learned by watching videos (using a pinpointer and a sheet for placing dirt on) there's absolutely no sign of any of my digs. The State Police even took a swing through the parking lot and never flinched.

Good to have ya back, nice finds that beer money will add up quick :laughing7:

Hey N2, welcome back. Hit any and all construction sites.
Get you a copy of the urban hunter.

Thanks Deno and everyone else. I missed a glorious opportunity by 1-2 years; the local village tore up the entire length of Main Street, including sidewalks on both sides. The first white settlers came in 1803. :(

Yea, you know you could have tore that up, I did the same thing, I had permission to hunt
all of Churchill Downs when they redid Central ave. I hadn't bought my first detector at
the time, I fiddle farted around until they were done then I got a detector. Once the
opportunity is gone, it's gone forever. Lets not let it happen again.

Welcome back to this wonderful hobby N2! Hope you have many more successful hunt!

I'm pretty close to you if you're in the area I'm thinking of. Did they take out some streetlights in your town and install a bunch of roundabouts?

Welcome back N2! :hello:

Hamburg. Roundabouts, yep, and I like them. :icon_thumright:

Hey we are neighbors! I live near Gowanda. If you ever want to do some detecting together PM me. I've been out of detecting for a couple years and I'm itching to get back into it!

I remember when they first installed them roundabouts...... people were almost killing each other! Lots of people were driving on the middle of them too!
