I was metal detecting at a old homesite (1830-1950) and a stage coach road (with: 4x4x4 and Diggergal) we were finding horseshoes, old tools, lead and pewter drippings, old bottles, and personal items from the people that lived at the homestead. I came across a signal that was reading like a zinc penny and I dug down about 2 inches and a bunch of iron pieces came out but the original signal was still there so I dug down another three inches and I saw a coin, at first it was covered in dirt and it looked like an Indian head penny but I started cleaning it a little and I saw a glint of silver so I thought it might be a mercury dime until we saw the back had an eagle and the front had some weird design on it, I thought it was just a peso and then I took a break to have some water and did some research and I found out that it is a Mexico 1 Reale (I cannot tell the whole date but it looks like 1830) that were made from 1825-1869, it was not only my first 90% silver coin but it was also my first coin from the 1800s. I am in complete shock that I found a Reale and that my first 1800s coin is a Mexico 1 Reale!!

Thanks for looking!

Do you think I should try to clean it to possibly get a date off of it or just leave it as it is?

Very impressive! Congrats!

I am no way a coin expert. Are you sure this is a reale? I don't recall seeing a huge eagle on the reales others have been posting here on T-net? Maybe I am missing something? Like I said NO Spanish silver expert here. The coin sure looks old, silver, and totally COOL! Just thinking it might be an old Mexican silver coin? I'll shut up now. Sweet find! Hunting with your mates even COOLER!:headbang:

Thanks so much! I did not think it was a Reale at first either.

Nice find!!!! Congrats!!!!!

Congratulations on your dirt hole digging with a silver lining! A reale? Unbelievable! Great find!

Way to go Hayden! I bet you are chompin at the bit to get back there. Congrats!!!

Way to go! I live in a place that should have some really old reales lying around, but they've proved quite elusive. Sure hope you find more! Congrats! :occasion14:
