Hi Everyone.
I dug my first silver coin today. A 1916-S Mercury Dime that is just beautiful.
I know I'm going to get a bit long winded here, but since it's my first silver and a bit of karma is involved please bear with me.
I didn't get to hunt Sunday because of the weather. Then on Monday I woke up to the sound of running water where there shouldn't have been any. Turned out I had a water line break so got to spend most of Christmas Day finding and putting a temporary fix on the leak. Thank goodness I had the stuff I needed since no one was open. Today wasn't looking much better since I had to contact a plumber, wait for them, etc. Fortunately they were able to get to me quickly and the repairs were well in progress when the phone rang. My wife was calling to tell me she had locked her keys in the car and could I bring her the spare set (Yes I know you can put a spare set in a magnetic holder. Last time I did that for her, she managed to lose the holder
). So I made arrangements with the plumber to settle up at the shop later and headed off to take the spare key to my wife and do my errands for the day.
I got all of that done and went by the shop, but the office staff were out to lunch so I went on home, put up the groceries and had some lunch. Went back to the shop and they still weren't back. The sign said they would be back at 1:30 and it was 1:25 so I waited. Finally at 1:45 I decided no use waiting when I could be in a nearby park.
I got to the park, popped the trunk and to my dismay, although the XLT was there my digging tools weren't. I hadn't put them back in the trunk after cleaning them. But I had my pocketknife and was in serious need of a couple of "metal hits" so off I went. While heading for the center of the park, I picked up a couple of cents, a dime and the obligatory pop tops (I've learned from ya;ll to dig those hits). I decided to work the bases of some big trees in the park and got an odd tone. Sometimes it was strong, other sweeps indicated junk. But since it was only 2 1/2" deep, I decided to dig. Got the plug out and saw just the barest hint of the rim in the edge of the hole. Popped it out and was absolutely amazed to find a Mercury Dime. I could see it was a 1916, but the reverse had dirt on it and I didn't want to spend "extra" time checking my find, so I put it in the goodie pocket, and hit the hole again. At the same level on the oppisite side was a nail. So that was the mystery of why I had the unusual sounds.
I got several more hits at 5-7" around some other trees, but only having my pocketknife I decided to save those for tomorrows dig. Besides I wanted to get home and find out if there was a mint mark on the reverse.
The other part of the story is that this is an old park that a couple of the locals who have been MD'ing for 30 plus years told me is all hunted out. I guess that is good for me because they don't hunt there any more. I doesn't bother me to go there at all because I'm still new enough to the hobby that even finding clad coins is exciting.
So I guess by doing my good deeds for the day, karma decided to reward me with a nice find.
