My Garrett Carrot tip wore through.

My Garrett Carrot tip wore through and now it's giving false readings, sometimes stays with a constant beep on even when near nothing. Is it common for these things to wear out? I've had it less than a year and the tip is pretty much gone. I don't dig with it, it's just sanded off. Can you coat them with something? I doubt if it's waterproof anymore because it was doing weird stuff from just getting the dew from grass on the tip.

Call Garrett and get a return number and ship it in. My switch went bad after 7 months, they replaced the switch, the housing and switch cover and returned it for no cost.

If you wore a hole in the tip of your carrot, thats on you, not a design problem. Apparently you are scrubbing that thing a lot more than you think you are. When you get a new one, yes you can use a plastic dip to provide a little more protection, but it sounds like you are going to wear through that quickly if you don't change how you use it.

Don't think the tip "sanding off" is a common occurrence no, and i seriously doubt if minelab would take to sanding any better.

go to Home depot (hardware) and ask for a white plastic Shepard leg tip, pick the size that fits your pointer and slip it on and you are back hunting. The come in pac's of 4.

Send it back to Garrett. If it is less than two years old it is covered under warranty. Garrett WILL take care of you!

I just wrap a couple layers of electrical tape around the end of mine, and redo it with fresh when it looks scruffy. Under the tape, is the newest looking spot on both my carrot and my TRX. ^_^

there is a tendency to get lazy and use the pointer as a scrapper and/or digger. i am guilty of this myself at times. have to be more cautious.

Tip failure is lame.

Pinpointers IMO should be able to be used as a "tool" not just a "buzzer"... heh.
When a target eludes you in a bunch of dirt / sand I use the tip as a "stick" so to speak...
If target is in a hole I prod / stab around so to speak ... even "stir" the sand / dirt etc...
Rocks / pebbles... unknown crapola is always a "hazard" to plastic.

Hence why I am a 580 guy myself... its construction... types of plastics... and solid.

A real "tool" as opposed to "device".

Sand is one thing ,try that up here in the dirt and frozen ground,rocky soil.
I don`t dig ,poke,prod in the ground with the coil on my detector,or my pin pointer,just sayin.

Oh... and have.
In upstate S.C. and the N.C. mountains ... for years.
And...
I will put the dirt (heh if ya wanna call it that) in The Keys to any up north dirt anyday as far as "hard" or difficultness...

Its coral and shell pack.
A shovel in some areas is like taking a shovel to concrete.

I use one tool primarily... a custom high grade SS heavy wall scoop... with hard angle.
But...
I carry a large Stanley waterproof toolbox with an assortment of "backup" goodies... like...

A foldable trench shovel... with pick.
An Estwing drywall hammer axe. (one side hammer one side axe)
A skinny SS slide scoop.
And a 21 inch ground tip Philips head.
OH forgot... gator tool... which I have never really used that much.
SS flour sifter.

I carry my scoop and the 580 stays on my MD belt... with pouch... on 2 inch dive belt. (which will never slip or slack btw)

Box also contains an array of tape... batts... batt pod... few shaft attachements... oh and Coil cover... which has its time to be used from time to time.

Coil cover fits / sticks in lid area perfect.... 10 inch anyway.

I use a Garrett pin pointer org. black 5 years no problems...i see the newer black Garrett is a PPII ...i `don`t know the difference...but i suspect build quality.
Digger Treasure Wise T10", T12" T14" sold them in me store for years, a very tough tool.
A Leashe Ground shark 28",but over the years it now ~ 26"
I hunt all year "Retired" in the frozen ground ...it freezes 4' around and use the packs for chisels and hammers and such.....but never carry it all at one time....but another tool i have to pack is a snow shovel.
