This is as old a coin as I am likely to get in this area, and my most exciting find yet. This was in a local but little hunted ghost town. I am so excited, Can any one identify this as large date or small date??

HAHHHH!! half dime I thought that was Ernest T

Great find...yeah looks like a large date.

Texan, yes it is Ernest T; I happen to be a huge admirer and posted it in his honor. He thanked me by throwing a brick through my window ;D.

I believe that all pictures posted in this thread so far are "medium date" 1848 half dimes, including the dug coin and both posted by mountainman 2. Here is a large date example from my collection (sorry, didn't dig it up, bought it). You can see that the date is freakishly large for a half dime, and overlaps the base of Ms. Liberty.

That's a great find, and I'm still waiting to dig my first half dime after many years.

Wow beautiful coin rhedden. I'm a thinkin so, I guess the key word is medium date, vs large date, there seems to be a small date also, 1844 and 1837 (kinda like the shield nickles,-(ultra small) I would judge mine as "medium Date" (with hopes of findin bigger and older) thanks for all ya'lls help.
I'm a thinkin that Lejeune otta be the new Liberty gal (uhhhh woman). (Cause shes smart and all of course).

Thats a nice one! I dug this one a couple months ago. It was in really nice condition, I think the date is normal size. Another one my buddy John dug around Dec. Last year. It's in rough shape, 1841

Sorry for any confusion, the source I pulled my bottom photo from IDed it as a large date.

I have seen tons of these found. J.D. in Missouri found probably around 40 last year.

A great find, Congrats

She's a beauty man...It sure is in dandy shape.
GREAT FIND!
