I have a good job for CRHing as I travel and move all over the US. I have been to several different regions of the US over the past 10 or so years I've been an avid CRHer. In my travels I've noticed some trends and I have formulated a theory on the different qualities we see in boxes from different regions. Here it is, attack at will:

Boxes come from the bags of coins that banks send back to the processesing companies like Brinks, Garda, etc. I know this because my teller friends have told me they ship them out when new coin in boxes comes in. I have had the opportunity to buy bags off the machines much more successfully in the Midwest than when I was on the East coast (not one did I ever get one). If you figure the bags from East coast banks are less searched because they won't let people buy them as much, then the boxes on the East coast should be better. I've seen this for sure. I've also gotten only a few good boxes in the Midwest. However, the banks seem much more open to selling the bags (who else will buy bags of halves except CRHers?), so the raw material is more picked over here. I've also noticed that when I get bags of machines they have always produced pretty consistently. So, maybe there is a relationship between not being able to buy the bags and getting better boxes in a region?

OK, poke my theory full of holes. I think I can take it.

one of my theories is that the more people that are searching, the better your chance of getting "recycled" coins when you order a box. When the banks get the dumped coins back, they send them to the Coin Service Company (Brinks, etc.) The CSC will rewrap those coins for bank delivery before they order more from the Federal Reserve. In areas where there are fewer banks, and fewer CSC's, and a lot of coin searching, the same coins are getting recycled into newly sealed boxes. You are buying this week what your neighbor looked at last week, which were probably the coins you searched the week before that.

E = mc2 is easier to undersand that how to find silver halfs.

It still amazes me that after 41 years of non-production, you can still find silver coins in rolls. There is not much reason to understand how, just enjoy that you can.

I'm on the East coast and I've been buying bags. Granted I work at the CU that I'm buying them from. :headbang:

It's cheaper for the bank or CU to sell you the bags because they don't have to pay Brinks or Loomis to cart them off so it's in their best interest to do so. Timing can be an issue though. The penny bags fill up much faster than the halves do. I've been at this particular branch for 6 months now and we fill up 5+ penny bags per week yet I don't recall seeing a bag of halves or dollars fill up yet.

Bags have to be the better source though. Especially around the holidays because everybody is cashing in their spare coin jar for shopping.

I'll add my two cents...when I started I got boxes from my CU and many branches also had coin machines. Now I'm in an area where there are no coin machines and my finds have been much less. I think when coin machines are available a lot of silver makes it back to the processors where it gets into boxes. Where no coin machines are available, the silver tends to get snatched up by tellers and searchers pretty quickly, and only the clad makes it back to by recycled.

banks do not allow me to by bags off their coin machines.

Good coins turned in down about 80% from 5 years ago. Number of hunters ordering large numbers of boxes has gone through the roof thus increasing the float of halves being processed by huge numbers just to satisfy demand. The float has become very large and diluted reducing the chance for the really good boxes to a tiny fraction of what it was only a year ago. CardsnCoins is in a time warp and should be ordering every box he can get his hands on before the vein runs out. We have met the enemy, and the enemy is us, but it's been one hell of a ride. Any comments?

We are money seeking creatures and always have been.

Up until the silver price surge..no one cared about AG. It wasn't on the media so no one cared, or knew for that matter. The public is generally naive if crap is not on media. Then the price started surging, then the general public started seeing more and more about PM's on news, internet, street corners, and a quick Google on silver investing, and you will eventually stumble upon FREE SILVER, and CRH from the idiots on Youtube (as I did). With more and more idiots CRH like amateurs telling friends, family, and TELLERS, it just caught on like wildfire because silver was peaked. It's no coincidence that finds have dropped off dramatically ever since AG broke $20.

Youre welcome.
