I found this in a field where I have found allot of early 1800's on up (even a king George)
It measures approx 2 inches long 1/2 inch wide
Made of brass (I think)
I seen it going through all the pieces and trash after it dried up

Looks like its "paid" for with a date (I guess) of 1869 on it?

Thanks in advance

I would suppose it may say"patd"and be a leather stamp.a simple guess

I agree with bigfoot1, I think it says PATD 1869

Looking at the second upper picture, you can see the top of the letter is wider than the bottom of the letter. I also think that letter is a "T"

My mistake, just got home, It is a "T" Sorry guys, bad look on my part.
Pat'd makes much more sense anyhow. It is soaking in distilled water now to clean it up better.
It looks like it was used to join wire together?
