If you found it in the water-the shifting sands due that------kinda polish it as it rolls in the tide ....They used them because - well iron & steel didn't do so well in salt water... Brass / bronze

This is true. I find shiny pennies in the surf. The waves polish them.

I did find it in the surf, so the tide must have kept in this condition. So its brass or bronze?

You may not beleive this but in a famous copper mining town as kids we used to put shovels in the water that had gathered in the old shafts and in a few months time the shovels were copper plated.I have found square nails in this water also copper plated
