I just dig this button up about an hour ago in the 300 year old park I have been bunting

I know it's navy. I am thinking wwII?

Really wish I could see some sort of back mark. But even after
Cleaning it. I can't see anything. Trying to put as close a date as I can on it before it goes in the shadow box

Thanks for the help

Bob

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your find is a civilian fashion button. 80030 - Eagles - Waterbury Button

There are some slight differences. From the button in the link to the one I posted. Look at the position of the cannonballs in relation to the stars. And the length of the lower shank on the anchor. And some others

Fyrffytr1 is correct. Sorry to have to disappoint, but super-small differences like the position of the cannonballs don't matter... your button is definitely a civilian-usage "Fashion" button made for use on imitation Navy pea-coats. Therefore, it is not shown in ANY of the books on actual American Military buttons.

Note that:
1- the horizontal anchor on your button is shown in a "straight-on" view, instead of an off-angle view as on actual US Navy buttons,
2- AND the rope encircling the button does not pass through the loop on the anchor's top,
3- your button has a super-wide rim, unlike any actual US Navy buttons (shown at the link posted by Ant).
4- your made-for-civilian-usage button can be purchased today at sewing-supplies stores such as Jo Ann Fabrics & Crafts.

Let me say again, I and this forum's ID-helpers are sorry to have to disappoint your hopes about your button, but the facts are what they are.

No disappointment at all. A cool relic from the ground still puts a smile on my face regardless of what it is. Now if I would of purchased it. I definitely would be upset. But it came out looking good and still going in the shadow box

No disrepair to Fyrffytr1. For help on the Id. I have a very limited knowledge on buttons and just noticed some differneces. Thanks to both of you for help on getting the correct Id

Here to hoping the next one is millitary

Hands down the most requested button ID involving military-like civilian blazer button has to be the type you found. To this day, I still remember the first one I found early in my hobby days. Had me doing the chicken dance thinking it was some sort of confederate navy button. I was certainly disappointed when I found out it was a civilian blazer button. Now I look back and chuckle about it.

The reason for the variation or differences in design is due to different button companies. This holds true with military buttons as well. Example are Civil War eagle buttons. Ever so slight differences in the head posture and size as well as angle, wings, talons, etc. Once you start getting a number of them in your collection you will notice it also.
