Need help with Bronze/Brass Cannon identification????

Hello. Received this bronze or brass cannon as a gift. Friend of mine built the carriage. I was curious about the history of the cannon. Want to clean, buff and shine it like new but don't wanna destroy the value if it worth something.:-)

Another believe it or not........Not only did the "at" sign mean 'monkey tail' in Dutch, the 'monkey tail' of a cannon was also the handspike extending from the rear of a cannon to aim and level the gun. I wonder if the "@" sign has anything to do with the handspike.

I wouldn't clean it, if you remove the patina, you take away it's history. And some of it's value as well.

I cannot tell by the pic and looks like tape is off center.
Is it 2 1/2 ?
Or 2 3/4 ?

the dutch in the 1600 / 1800 era used to make a lot of brass / bronze type cannons in the area they used to call the "spice islands" aka as java and borneo --commonly call Indonesia to day

it might be a "pressure proof" type of marking letting the gunner know how much powder to how much shot for safe shooting

Do not touch the patina!!
The number is an inventory number from when it was recorded in the armory. You may have some luck identifying which ship it was assigned to. It does not look like it is sea salvaged. I have seen others with similar inventory numbers.
It is a naval swival gun.
Not sure of the maker.
But leave the finish as is, no serious collector will want it if you do.

If you clean it, you'll ruin it. Will be worth scrap value then.

Could be worth a pretty penny. But like they said if you clean it it will destroy the value. Very nice item and welcome aboard!
