I found this button in a 1770s field a number of years ago and have always figured it was just a basic ornate button. However, I cant get over that there appears to be a star missing. There are 7 stars that go around (if it were 13 I would assume it was special). Do you think this was just a handmade button whose maker neglected to complete correctly or is it something more? something "revolutionary"?:laughing7: unnamed (1).webp

Does it say "long live the president" on it somewhere?[emoji23][emoji23] No, I think this is just civilian but I might be wrong. Awesome button though![emoji106]🏻

You didn't say whether your "ornate" (decorated) brass button is a 1-piece or 2-piece button. Its sloping edges make it appear to be a 2-piece... which would mean it was made no earlier than about 50 years after the 1770s. A photo of the back might help for identification.

I count 8 stars. One is missing it's light circular background but the star is still there. It's at the 11 O'Clock position.

Hahaha I can't believe I got this far without noticing. My wife is right, I don't "pay attention to details"
