I'm just below you in the Red Clay state of GA. When the ground gets hard down here I use a small hammer and cold chisel to dig with, works great in this clay soil which gets as hard as a brick in the summer, and it works great when the ground is frozen too.

I sort of stumbled upon a badger the other day while looking for old foundations in the brush. If I could coax him into a cage I could send him to you. He might be friendly though as I could see his teeth as he was smiling at me ::)
