New find - any ideas what it is?

Found this using metal detector by old road bed. Its very heavy - maybe bronze/brass not sure. Any ideas on what it might be? Thanks for any help.

Looks to be a sword blade guard. The part between the blade and the handle

might have also been at the top of throat for a sword/knife scabbard, depending upon length.

That sounds like a better idea then a blade guard
