The weather was the best part of the day considering some of us can't get out and dig. High was about 35 but no wind. Friend called and asked me to join him at a new spot that had significant confederate movement. Not sure what this Union Navy button was doin out there :laughing7: The coins don't look so hot but they are what they are :hello2: 3 center is dateless, Large cent is unidentifiable, IH-1880 I/S

P.S. thank you Buckleboy for trying to help me i.d. what I thought was a confederate button :laughing9: I didn't know the drooped wing eagles were on union buttons :dontknow:

added 2 new pics of button with different light

Those are really some great finds. I want a 3 center this year--Badly! Bravo to you two. :hello2:

That button would be a real eye-popper if you used aluminum jelly on it.

Thanks SS and BB, we did try some aluminum jelly twice but for a very short periods of time. guessing it needs a bit more :icon_scratch:

I thought that had already been cleaned. What's left to clean? If it's gold and black and no green, you're done.

I thought it was clean too. I was just replying to BB's comment about it needing aluminum jelly. The button is not in as great of shape as I thought when I first dug it. If you look at the pic all the greenish-black spots are where the gilt peeled off :dontknow:

Peeled off, or wasn't there and the cleaning just exposed it?

I don't know either... one of those things you have to see in person to evaluate.

If it was a very rare or valuable button I'd be concerned but I like it the way it is now so I'll just put it back in the E-drawer (everyday stuff) :laughing9:

Yeah, I think it's ok, probably was no better before, and couldn't be much better no matter what you did.

I remember the first time I cleaned a button that was in killer find territory... a bit of nerves happening there. and... Probably just as many when I threw it in the oven to wax it. :laughing7:

That's 100% true.

Here's one that's even funnier! In 2001 I found a fairly rare valuable button and I used a large box to transport it through the house. If I had to take it into another room to get a picture, in the big box it went. ;D There was NO WAY I was going to drop that sucker!

Doesn't matter how rare or common it is. Use every button as a chance to practice and hone your cleaning techniques. To start with, I wouldn't be using a needle. I have a good post up in "Cleaning and Preservation." I have enough trouble trying to keep the gilding ON a button with a shish kebab skewer. I would think that a metal needle would strip it off and do serious damage.
