New to MD

I could use some help with knowing when I should dig and when I shouldn't.
I like coins, and I've heard that old coins give off a bad signal...
Any adivce?

Old coins don't really give off a bad signal, only a weaker one when they are deep. Most don't dig for them unless they are deep and instead use something like a screwdriver or probe to pop the shallow coins out of the ground. If you have to dig a plug, place the dirt on a cloth so you can place all the dirt back in the hole. Take all trash you dig out with you.

For me, anything 3'' deep or less with an unsure signal I may not dig, but anything deeper than 3'' I'll dig,the past 2 liberty nickels I've dug were around 4'' to 5'' and the m6 jumped all over from iron to nickel.

Just starting out? Dig everything. That is the only way to learn what your machine is telling you. In time you'll get an idea of what to avoid.

Old and deep coins give weaker signals. Silver and gold rings can sound just like pulltabs.

Yes, you can cherry pick and set a detector to only signal of coins. But the old coppers, small denomination silvers (three & five cent) and most jewelry will get past you.

I still dig everything. Gold rings will register like a pull tab or aluminum so is you like to find gold you are going to have to dig the junk also. Yes take everything home with you and have some buckets set up so you can sort your junk by what type of metal it is and at the end of the year take it to the recycle center and cash it in. the first 5 rules to MD'n are ...

#1. dig every signal

#2. Dig everything

#3. pick up trash you dig

#4. FILL IN YOUR HOLES !!!!!!!!!!

#5. if all else fails allways remember to just dig everything .

Get a good experienced friend to show you what to do. Do not listen to the advice to "dig everything". Dig what you KNOW is good, which is very little these days. Metal detecting takes 100+ hours to learn.

If you do not have someone to show you the basics, digging everything will be your only hope, and it's only going to be a big lesson in futility. If you do not have an experienced friend to show you the basics, you have a long row to hoe. You will have to learn your machine, AND metal detecting, all alone. Its like learning to talk, then learning to read, then learning to write, all by yourself. It wont be easy without a good teacher.

I cannot believe that these guys are telling you to dig everything. They don't dig everything, so why would you? Only dig good repeatable signals, which is THE FIRST RULE OF DETECTING, and if you don't know what that means, you are in trouble.

Thanks guys, the only problem with getting advice from a friend is that I don't know of ANYONE in my area that MDs.
Dig everything sounds good...

Get out there and start swingin that coil!....you'll figure it out, justs takes time huntin,. but thats the fun of it! Metal detedcting is for the fun and challenge of the hunt.
