New to Metal detecting (Advice)

There are many good machines. Where do you plan to detect? How much do you want to spend?
 

For a person just starting to detect, I would say you need about $200.00-$300.00 to get started.

I am new to t-net. I recieved a metal detector from my wife and just requested it was american..Well the poor dear tried, I got an mpx . Not american, and a bit cheesy for the 300 she spent. I thought I would give her a try and it hit on everything unfortunatly. I live in new yorks hudson valley and thier are minerals in everything. I did was digging on the hudson and found a lenghth (sic) of cable from I believe the revolutionary war . They put them across in various places to prevent the british from going up river.. In short made a call to kellyco and they will upgrade me to a minelab 305...need the groundbalancer..

I started with the ACE 250. Bought a pinpointer when I figured out I was going to like doing this. The 250 is very easy to use and when I started the graphics with the sound helped me out. Lots of used ones out there from people who have upgraded. The pinpointer is a necessity to me.
 

Welcome to Tnet! Terry and others have given you some good machine choices but left out a set of headphones, not mandatory if you do not mind missing the quiet signals (gold rings, deep old coins and the like). Me I'm a White's guy but in general any "brand name" modern machine will get you on down the road though Tesoro's are nice and light. You might want to purchase a machine that has a good selection of accessory coils. Oh and be sure to dig proper plugs and fill in your holes as if not the police may give you a ticket or at least kick you off your spot..................63bkpkr

Hey you said your a whites guy what do you think of the coinmaster pro I was thinking of upgrading to that from my coinmaster 5000/d from the 70s
 

Well I've never used one but I would think if it was a modernized coinmaster that it would do quite well. I still have my 6000 D Coinmaster and with that old fashioned switch and knob analog machine I knew what was in the ground before I dug it! Check out the Brands section under metal detecting on Tnet, to to Whites and click on coinmaster and see what folks have to say about it. I've heard some good coments on the M6 by Whites.......63bkpkr
 

I really like my Whites XLT. I bought it on eBay about 10 years ago for $400. It is still worth what I paid for it. I enjoy the programmability and have found lots of treasure. You can still buy them on eBay for that price and I think they are better than the low price new ones. I have sent it back for service and was very pleased with the factory repairs. Mine lab, Whites, Fisher are all good brands but consider a higher quality used detector before buying a lesser quality new one. :)

I plan on looking for coins/ jewelry, anything war related (bullets) etc. any ideas, I really don't want to spend more than $300 because I also want to buy a pinpointer.
 

I would go with an Ace 250 or 350. Get the propointer and I myself woud bother with the knee pads, they become cumbersome and irratating if you getting up and down 100 times a day. I would dectect for awhile before I bought $100's in accessories. Some people want it all at once but remember your going to be swinging the detector and getting up and down alot. I bought a simple masonry trowel from Lowes and sharpened the sides lil on my grinder and it works better than a $40 Lesch

I bought the Garrett ACE 250, seems pretty easy to use, I also bought a Garrett Lesch and pinpointer. My question is what type of gloves would recommend? My hands and nails were so dirty not to mention I almost cut my finger on a piece of metal I detected. What about a little bigger shovel like an army shovel? Your thoughts?
 

My favorites are the mechanix gloves. Cheap, tight fitting and offer enough protection. As far as diggers, try not to use shovels in Parks and sensitive green spaces. I only take my shovel out to the opens fields and woods. Shovel in town will only bring attention to yourself like a backhoe would.
 

Yeah the shovel I was only going to use in wide open spaces. I def don't want to bring attention to myself. I will def look into the gloves. Thank you.
Off subject, are there any metal detecting rallies?
 

Where are you located? We have seeded hunts and club hunts in the states. I think the Rallies are across the pond from us! International Metal Detecting Day is coming up in a few weeks.

Found these 2 fields not far from my parents new house. Pics attached.

Is it recommend to look in the open fields? If it was plowed over and over through the years anything is probably long gone. I'm new to this so what are your thoughts? Are these good locations to detect?

I use Kevlar Gloves with the rubberized palm and fingers. It saved me a large cut yesterday as I grabbed a large piece of broken glass out of the hole I was digging. Look at home depot or Lowes
