Detector(s) used
Gold Century 1016A (for now)
I'm really enjoying this site and have learned a lot from the many posts I've read here. I decided to go in cheaply to see if this was something I would want to continue to do and I think it is. I bought one of the China Junk detectors, Gold Century 1016A, that EasyMoney has posted about and so far I've been very satisfied for the price.

Now my questions. This detector has one button for sens and one for disc. I'm in Colorado Springs so I have the more mineralized soil and I usually set the disc around 12:00 and leave the sens at max. This seems to give good hits (I can almost get a constant tone if I slowly hover around the target) on coins, the one silver ring I found, and tests of a gold ring (also tabs and cans). When I'm on iron or junk it tends to be an initial good tone that abruptly stops or does a lot of crackling (some of the smaller junk doesn't sound at all which is nice). Does it sound like I'm setup correctly or am I possibly missing good items by my disc setting and not digging all sounds? If I turn disc down or go all metal, I get tons of junk in all the parks/playgrounds I've been at so far. Maybe, I'm just not detecting in the right places.

I'm definitely still learning and trying different things but I thought I'd see what feedback I get from here.

PS. right now I'm thinking of upgrading to the Silver UMax in the near future.

sounds like your doing good, depends what you are looking for, if gold, a good way to tell is put a nickle on the ground and set your disc so the nickle will still sound off clean

Do what Thompy says to do with a nickel and a gold ring too.

I would look into upgrading very soon as your fun will improve. Welcome to the hoobby and the forum..........

Thanks for the info. I have found a few nickels but if I remember correctly they don't sound as cleanly as other things. I'll play with getting the settings better for them. So far about $12 in clad but no silver coins, wheats or IH's.

Coshockie, This is a very good site and everypone will teach you alot. But be careful! Most of these guys will not steer you wrong, but be careful of info overload! One fellow will swear by a certain detector and another will try to sway you to his kind. The truth is ALL reputable detectors are good. The OPERATOR, with years of experience, turns it into the dream machine. Hold off on the next detector until you get to know the one you have. Also, as you meet some of the guys and gals, you'll get to try other machines. THEN, maybe, make another purchase. TerryC

coshokie,

Try hunting for an hour or so with the Sensitivity at 1/2 to 3/4. Let me know how you do. Joe

First thing I do when I hit a trashy area in a park is turn down the sen to 1/2 or less and turn up disc until I'm clear of the area.

Also slowing your swing will help your machine recover between targets giving you cleaner sound.

Try outlining your target while pin pointing, shredded cans will give off good signals but have a large outline. Wire will have a long and skinny outline.

Mark your digging tool for depth and always fill in your holes, you may want to go back to that site someday.

Ok, I did some air tests with the "china junk model" on a nickel, gold ring, silver ring, pull tab and clad. Sorry, I didn't do any measurements other than to notice that if I had to get closer to get a good signal, that metal didn't signal as well.

Nickels go out first closely followed by tabs and gold at almost the same time. So, it looks like to have a shot at gold, I'll be digging lots of tabs too. I could probably disc out the tab but to find gold it would have to be laying on the surface. Silver seemed to be the strongest along with a quarter. The dime was a little weaker than the silver and quarter. Pennies do about the same as the dime, probably slightly weaker.

From what I can tell this is about right for a machine of this caliber. BTW, I don't take offense to "china junk model" because even though its a better machine than that, its definitely not a $300+ machine. Maybe I should change my profile to show the detector as a CJM??? ;D

On the suggestion of turning the sens back to 1/2, I need to try that next hunt.
