I was putting up a grab bar in my shower and the Stud Finder I had was broken. I was planning to go to Home Depot to buy another Stud Finder when a friend asked if my metal detector could be used to locate the stud. Since Stud Finders detect nails in the stud for location – Stud finders are actually low grade metal detectors. I fired up my Pointer (Garrett Carrot) and was amazed how well the Pointer worked to find my studs through thick 2ft x 2ft ceramic wall tile. I moved the Pointer left to right until the Pointer buzzed, marked the spot, and then moved the Pointer right to left until it buzzed and marked the spot. I then marked the center point between the 2 buzz points to locate the stud. All 4 grab bar screws found the stud. Wife is happy and I found a new use for my metal detecting Pointer.
