New Video & A Botched Recovery!

I went out this Saturday for two and a half hours for two major reasons, to shoot some video and because of all the rain we recently had. The day started off really good with a silver quarter appearing early in the game. Also managed a silver dime towards the last thirty minutes of the hunt. It wasn’t until I started editing and cutting up the video for Youtube that I realized the possible mistakes I made along the way. One of those, the obvious one, I have pointed out in the video. The second, I didn’t realize until much later. I’ll call it an Easter egg. I spoke to Joe G on this one and asked him……….should I save myself the embarrassment and cut that stuff out of the video? Joe said leave it! A lesson learned in the past has now been reinforced. I was a little distracted with the camera on this occasion. Enjoy guys….

OH MAN!!!! I paused the video and that was most definitely another silver in there. Now I know why you called me :) I know exactly how you felt! This past spring I was hunting in an area where I found a LC and some colonial buttons. After crawling on my hands and knees through thorns and brush I hit another "clearing". A couple of swings and Bingo! I heard a nice deep tone that I knew was another coin. I reached for my digger and it was gone. I dropped it somewhere. 45 minutes later and I still couldn't find it. Went back to the around the same area the next weekend with Crocop and found my digger! Sure enough, as we were getting ready to leave I hit that same good tone. Dug down and plucked out a LC :) Go figure...

That puppy is still waiting for you! I wish I could go with you and Tom next Saturday, but it looks like I'll have to work. Put the vid back on the camera, play it while you're there and try to match up the trees at the site. I'm sure, between the both of you, you'll be able to find it.

Great vid (as usual) :D

It's a total mind f Joe. Are you going out Sunday? In any event, I do need to go back there. I thought the same Joe, I'm going to use the full length clips to figure out the exact position. I'll just slap those clips on my PSP and away we go (Bigger screen). Did you see the 3:46 thing Joe? I am nearly convinced that might have been another coin besides the one that is obvious.

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

I saw it, Ric! Oh my gosh! :D I have no doubt that you will find it again, though. ;)

Great on the video! Thanks! Congrats on the finds!

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

Another great video by you Ricardo. You do them so well. I too saw what appeared to be another silver quarter then the text came up. Maybe if you go back there with the camera to view the video you can see the surrounding area that might help get that other silver. That definitely is a lesson learned. Once you get in the habit of rescanning every hole it'll become second nature and you won't even realize it. I rescan the hole before hinging the plug back into place and rescan after the plug is in place. I know you'll go back and find that other quad. Once again, great job on the video and looking forward to the next one.

Yes my friend, you need glasses. I think it's around 3:36 to 3:46 of the vid, stop it and look at the bottom of the screen left middle. I see another disc, could have been a nickle. Hey, look at it this way. You know the spot and you can recheck the hole next chance you get. Actually good thing you have video, you'd never have known you may have missed another coin. Good work!

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

At the very begining of the dig I thought I saw a coin shaped mud clod flicked away 3.46-3.48, then I saw the other one just after your recovery maybe more than 2 coins in that hole.

Yep that was it. 3:46 stop it, at the bottom center left half of screen.

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

Thanks for sharing that video ricardo I bet you find that hole and I bet you find more than one other coin, the more I look at it the more I think I see. Please keep us informed, of course your probaly out diggin for it right now.

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

Excellent video!

You gotta find that plug again, that's gotta be another coin (or maybe two) still in that hole.

Make sure you keep the camera rolling so we can all share in the fun.

Good stuff, thanks!

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

Ricardo, if you slow the tape down, it looks to me as though the coin seems to fall from the dirt on the digger. maybe it's me.
Excellent video

Here's some screenshots. Go back and get that sucker. You know we're all counting on you. ;D ;)
How big is the memory stick in your camera? I might give this video thing a go.
Take care, Mike

My var/limits are set to Default Dan, and that is 7 or 8 if I remember correctly on the var.. I know that with those settings at max, one can hear the difference between a silver and non silver dime, as Joe G here showed Tom, but I've gotten used to the machine in simpler settings. I don't really want to get into the habit of cherry picking between clad dimes/quarters and silver ones. I'm afraid that habit will cause me to miss things. The only settings I have changed are the gain, usually at 7 or 8, and I do turn deep or fast on/off depending on trash. Manual sens all the time between 19 and 21. Those are the only things I touch.

Ricardo
You know what, it seems to me you know what you're doing and it can only get better. I just would hate to think you found a comfort zone and didn't do anything more. I'm definately wrong and you're going at it the way thats best for you!! Continued success Ricardo!!
Ricardo, I noticed you said your not changing some settings because you are used to the machine in simpler settings. That could be the difference from 100 silver coin year to a 200+ silver coin year. Your settings might be missing older silver/on edge silver or maybe "hidden" silver. We sometimes get in a "comfort zone" and not try different settings. I know you are new the the Explorer and just getting used to it, but you might just want to play around a little on certain days to get out of your comfort zone and find another zone that could end up with Seated instead of Mercs. BTW, super video and a nice almost three silver day!! One more thing, I try different settings and rarely cherry pic because I've found Seated coins that hit like a zinc cent as shallow as 1 inch. I never pass up any quarter and some heavy Mens rings hit in the penny/dime range too!! Just a couple cents worth from me.

I totally agree with what you are saying Jack. So far, the only settings I have changed are the ones mentioned. Very recently, I've been tampering with the Deep and Fast settings. I really want to get to know the machine in different stages, and I am experimenting as I go along. What I do not want to get into is trying so many different things in such a short period of time, that I never get good at or learn the machine in any which one or way. I've had the machine for approximately almost four months and still do not feel a comfort zone. I feel that I am still learning to understand it. I know there is more down the road. I think my next step will be experimenting with the Iron Mask setting, which I also keep at default. I'm just taking it in steps as I feel comfortable.
Looks like you are doing whats right for you and that your taking your time to learn the Explorer. Was just hoping you didn't get "stuck" in a comfort zone like many do and miss so many good coins! From what you say that won't be a problem and I wish you continued success!! I also hope you find those two more silver coins in that hole!

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

I saw it too, hopefully you will find it again. Retracing your steps in the woods can be hard, but if you're familiar with the area it makes it a little easier. Great video with the 2 silvers, keep em coming.

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

Great video, Ricardo, and great finds. Just wondering....isn't it cumbersome to be on the ground and have to keep picking up the detector to check your spot? Why not use a pinpointer..say, the White's Bullesye? For me, it saves me time in digging, plus gives me a more accurate place to look w/o screwing the coin up. I know some others prefer not using a pinpointer, but... ;)
Just a thought. Again...congrats....and it does go to show...scan and rescan.

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

ouch! i hope you get back and find it! i think it's time to invest in a sunray inline probe. they're not too expensive, about $200, but they are PRICELESS! you'll never miss another coin like that again!

great video! good luck!

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

What a great job on that video! I wish I had the patience to do that and maybe with your inspiration I WILL!

You got TWO more in that hole...Argggghhh.

You know I've only found 5 silver dimes, one of which was a merc...AND I can tell you within 4 inches exactly where I found each one.

I really love those Mercs..a beautiful coin.

Best of Luck going back and getting those coins [before someone seeing your video and beating you to it.. :D]

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

Great video, I enjoyed watching it. It will be interesting to see what the other coin was.

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

I'm going to be pessimistic and say it's a small root that you scraped with your digging tool. The other thing is a round piece of dirt. The mind plays tricks on us...especially when we know what we want to see. You have to go back though and check, no doubt about that, I hope I'm wrong.

I have a tendency to think I see coins (IH's and wheats) when I make a round indentations with my White's probe.

Re: New Video & A Botched Recovery!

Wow !!, Ricardo, there was definitely more than one coin in there. I saw the round clump too, It looks like a coin caked in mud, when you flipped it over I even saw a glimpse of silver :o. You almost had me screaming "there it is, there it is !!". Then the second coin kinda played peekaboo, the way it hid from you. Man that's a great video and you got it on film. That was exciting, glad you didn't edit it out. I would definitely go back, I know you will get it next time..
