All Treasure Hunting
Good afternoon!
I ran across this site a couple of months ago when I arrived in Afghanistan. I'm actually an Indian relic hunter, but have really gotten excited as I read about what is being found by metal detecting! I had an old White's many years ago, but it was a cheap model and I think because I dug so much junk, I found myself not utilizing it and ended up selling. Anyways, I'm in the market for one when I get back next April and I keep seeing a lot of good things posted about the AT Pro. I'm from Ohio and have many old homesteads, foundations, etc., that I'm able to hunt. Just wanted to throw this out there to get solid opinions before I go spending the money on this unit. Also, I see there are different coils available. Does this really make a difference or is the factory head fine? Thanks in advance for all the responses.

Thanks for your service. Ohio sounds great,as do your available sites. I do not own atpro, i like the reviews though. Maybe start with stock coil see if areas require a smaller coil? Could be cheaper to acquire two coils with unit if buying new and budget allows. Finds waiting for you !. Best wishes.

welcome to tnet and you cant go wrong with the at pro i use the stock dd coil on mine and its great i personally dont see the need for anyother size coil i can make it do anything that another coil could do hope that helps. BE SAFE OVER THERE AND THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO

First and foremost thank you for your service, second, welcome to TreasureNet...

Different coils for different situations the same as one detector is not the best for the different types of hunting. The AT is
a good detector, best part is it is waterproof to I think 10 feet I say I think because I don't own one. To clean it up after hunting in the rain and you just take it in to the shower with you

Since you still have time I advise you keep reading on different detectors till your closer to coming home safe.

Your service is appreciated and God bless. Think the AT-Pro would be a great way to go. I don't own one but hear really great reports. ....

Remember to take one off top of each mag ( The F/A takes too much time when ya need on the trigger ) and a 5 second fuse lasts 3 seconds. Come home safe!

Hey Specwar,
Former 82nd Airborne here,
You've seen and heard it before, but it merits recognition again. Thank you for doing a thankless job. And we appreciate your service in providing freedom.
I have an AT Pro, Ace 350, and a pro pointer. The AT is an all terrain, iron junk, discriminating beast. I just put a smaller 5x8 DD coil on. It is amazing at separating good targets from junk targets. With the smaller search area you will have more ground to cover, but can really get tight on good finds next to the crap. The DD coil is the coil of choice for mineralized soil. If you're going to be hunting around old homesteads & foundations, you are likely to encounter a lot of old nails, tacks, iron, etc. I am relatively new to MDing, but have trained myself well on the Pro. I've gone back over sights I initially hit with the 8x11 stock coil, and have retrieved new finds with the 5x8. Don't forget a pro pointer- save you a lot of extra digging time!

If you're like me, adverse weather does not affect my ability to work outside. The AT is water proof. I've had it in creeks, and out in the woods during a rain storm.
Hope this helps. Thanks again. Stay safe.

Thanks TNGUNS!

bacusa.......A big thanks to you also! Looks like I'll go with the 5x8 also. What is a pro pointer??

It is a small metal detector that only goes about an inch or two deep. Just go over dirt to locate target. Just makes stuff easier to find. Vids on youtube etc.

Thanks for your service! Check out the barracks section further down the forum also.Good place for vets.

military thankyou.webp

God bless and thank you for your service!

Can't help with ATPro, but just want to welcome you to TNet. A great bunch of folks here.

Specwar,
The pro pointer, by Garrett, is a handheld detector (small magic wand), for use after your crossed-haired where you're gonna dig. Think about this.... You have a good signal, you want to dig, you put your pro pointer on the potential dig site to confirm ( if a shallow target) your in the right real estate. Once you dig a small hole or plug, you want to confirm in which direction your going to retrieve that target. Solid tone/beep from pointer says you are on top of or adjacent to target. Intermittent tone/beeps-you are close.... keep moving around until you get steadiest tone. It is really a fine hand held tuning after you've hit a signal.

Look up Garrett Pro Pointer. It is a must have to go along with your main Metal Detector. If not a Garrett, look at pin pointers from other brands. Once I got mine, I started saving a lot of time by fine tuning which direction to go after my target.
Example: If you dig a 6" target in a 3-4"wide hole, wouldn't you like to know where the signal is specifically coming from?
Hope this helps.

I will not share my opinion of our military or our actions overseas on this board, for it's not the time nor the forum.

THAT BEING SAID, please be safe as you serve your tour of duty, and as much as you may enjoy hunting for treasure, please do not ever let it endanger your life in such a tumultuous location.

Be safe!

Thank you for you service and sacrifice to this great country. I just had a thought.... if the metal detecting community could hand out detectors faster than the bad guys can bury IEDs, do you think the kids could dig them up faster than they can be planted?? Would be a nice thought! TTC

Had a lot of fun in the Ghan my self.

Anyway, if you can get to BAF, go all the way down Disney towards Area 87 where all the OGA's are at. There should be some South Africans down there who are UXO hunters. They get new kit every three months, they have the best kit money can buy. They just trash there old kit or sell it for pennies on the dollar. Since your still in then they will most likely just give it to you for nothing. Grab what ever you can and as much as you can, taxes paid for the contract anyway and it is better than some local getting out of the trash so they can develop a new IED that is not detectable.

If you have trouble finding them let me know and I can put you in contact with some mates from my old Team that are there right now. But the SA's are only dumping in KAF & BAF as these are the main log hubs.

This is where I got my first ground penetrating radar system and I have been hooked ever since on them.
