newbie having fun hunting coin rolls

I just started trying this for fun. Would never have the funds to do the volume of the major coin roll hunters.

searched through a $10 roll halves + $2 in teller drawer - nothing
returned and search 2 dime rolls - nothing
returned for $20 nickels - first roll found a 1931 canandian 5 cent coin. kept a few 1961 and older. - told to return them at another bank.
returned and got $80 more - No silver but did get a final total of about a roll of pre 1961 nickels.

checked out my few coins at home found a 1982 washington DC metrobus token (poor) in pennies and pulled out the pre 1981 coppers.
got one war wheat penny. no silver dimes etc.
will just deposit the leftover coins.

1981 are 95% copper. Why save1961 and pre 1961 Nickle? ALL NICKELS ARE CLAD, except war nickelswhich are 35% Silver.

I meant to say before and including the 1981 dates for the pennies.
Also saved 1982 because I read this link first Is My Penny a Copper, or a Zinc Cent?

The old nickels are just nice to have in a collection to me since I had none of them before and I got them at face value.
I knew the silver content was zero.

I would say pre-1960 would be better to save. Was the "war wheat penny" a steel cent?

I just picked date of 1961 since the coin collecting folder ended on that date and it was 50 years ago.

Yes the steel made it stick out from the other pennies. At first I thought it was just a metal detected penny.
This one came from my pocket change.

My oldest penny is an Indian Head found in change while counting registers at my retail job.
At first I thought it was one of the many foreign coins I found in pennies (canada,bahamas, pesos?).
Always had us do the pennies by hand as weighing them wouldnt give accurate results.
My boss bought the halves and large 1970s $1 coins which once showed up.
Occasionaly we would get a $2 bill or Susan B Anthony $1 coin as well.

Neither coin I have mentioned from collection is in great shape but I still keep them.

My book also ends in 1961. I just look for the 1960s and 1961s that are in good condition to replace the ones in my book, but don't keep all of them.
