Newbie Seeking advice

After coming across this site I am intrigued and considering the purchase of a metal detector. I am in northern Colorado and would be primarily searching parks and trails or public areas. I would like to get the best equipment probably trying to stay under $500 if possible. Any reccomendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's a fun hobby, but don't expect to get rich.

Check out the "Brands" forum a little further down the main page. You'll get a bazillion opinions on who thinks what detector is the best bang for your buck.

I'm a White's man myself. Been using their machines for years. There are some serious Minelab folks here and other brand dedicated people.

If your looking to do parks and such, maybe limit your investment to a couple hundred bucks and buy an Ace 250 or 350. I personally don't know squat about them but everyone on here that has bought one has raved about them. Cheap, easy to use, durable....good beginner machine. You could pick one up cheap used on Ebay or from someone on here in the personals. The 250's run I think around $250.00 or so.

And since I'm a White's guy, my 2 cents worth...Buy a White's...lol. A lot of MXT users on here love those machines. Not sure of the cost but they swear by em.

The use of metal detectors today is really quite common among the general public, specifically those interested in finding treasures and other important relics. Listen carefully and be careful about your device at each depth. Dig up every find. This involves some work nonetheless it is the right procedure to handle your metal device. You need to read the manufacturer’s manual as a minimum 3 times and take it along on numerous trips. Understanding your metal sensor could be the primary key to being victorious and pleased with your metal detector. Depending on your budget, there are plenty of affordable and high-quality products out there. You could expect these to cost around $27o to $1,000 or more. As you might guess, the lower the price of these detectors, the lesser the features would be. And that could actually be a good thing because you really don't need complicated features just to start this hobby. Just make sure that you are aware of the type of metal detecting you'll focus on, so that you'll know what types of detectors you should look for.

Picking the first detector can be a challange but it is best to start simple. Visit each manufacturers website to learn about all models. If there is one thing they all say is "their detector is the deepest." Take this with a cup of salt. Your choices are the ones with a display screen like the ACE 250 or 350 or the onces without the screen. These can be had from the major manufacturers and I don't advise you to buy used to save a buck as it can be operating badly and you wouldn't know it from lack of experience. I am not a fan of LCD screens cause you leave a lot of good targets in the ground because it didn't lock on a certain coin value. Remember the detector reports on the conductivity of the target and not what is really is.

Best thing you can learn is how to remove a coin from the grass without having to dig a hole and have the land owner shoot you in the back of the head for ruining the grass. I use a screw driver for the shallow coins and only dig a plug if I am in the fields or woods. I still pack out the trash and cover the hole so nobody can tell I was there.

If your going to get a garret get the 350 it's better the the 250 for a little more money but I would by a White's my self go up to the top and look at the White's company,been known not to have any good things to say a bout garrets detectors.

also once you deciede on a detector call several dealers and ask for their best price, most of the time they will drop the prices down that are advertised on their sites. its alot like shopping for a car.....just haggle with them
