I know it's not a cool coin but it's a neat little apothacary bottle that still had the stop and glass dropper intact- Found near a small spring in Warwick.

I've been corrected- it's not apothacary- I love this place for all the information from you all!

Looks like an iodine bottle. Has ribbs like a poison bottle and iodine is poison.

It may be a Mercurochrome bottle? HH :icon_thumright:
Broken Knee

So any bottle with ribs is considered to contain poison? Wow that is really cool to know! I seem to remember iodine for cuts?
Thanks so much for the info!

What's Mercurochrome?
It's an antiseptic also, used before iodine. And it's blue in color. "I stand corrected it's red"

The Mercurochrome I remember as a kid was reddish brown. I got lots of it used on me and it was never blue!

Same here. And I saw enough of it on my body to know! LOL!

Ribs and little embossed diamonds were put on bottles supposedly so people could identify them in the dark and wouldn't take the poison by accident. That doesn't mean any bottle with ribs contained poison though. Check out the brown bottle in this picture. It is an Iodine bottle that is marked POISON.

This one has from left to right on the bottom: A "14", a circle with what looks like an eye through it and then a "2".

I'll have to brush up on my bottle info!

I dont run into many cool bottles but I love to see collections like yours! Very very nice!

I am pretty sure that is bottle manufacturer information on the bottom and doesn't have anything to do with the bottle contents.

From 8th grade till I graduated from college I did a lot of bottle digging. I didn't own a metal detector then :laughing7:

Hey Bev how far up the bottle does the seam go?

This can date a bottle :read2:

Ex: Up to the lip
Over the lip
Up to the neck
half way up the neck

The lower the seam, the older the bottle...

-2 seams going up over the rim, Blaze. I think the use of a rubber stop is a big clue and I think that Pete nailed it with Illinois Glass Co.
Funny thing is yesterday I was asked if I was interested in going to a meeting of the Little Rhody Bottle Club- Finding this little guy must be a sign that I may enjoy it!

That would make it a post 1900's bottle i believe....Probably from the 30's or 40's..

I know "AL THE BOTTLE GUY" from the little rhody bottle club..He sent me lots of information on
bottles a few months ago
Good people..

Sorry for the off topic, but that Jim Morrison was f'n with me... that is pretty kool.....

As for the Ribbed Bottle... Most Poisons are either Ribbed, hobblenailed or irregular shaped to help you know that it was poisonous if you was reaching for a bottle in the dark or a not so well lit room...

having a Odd shape / bright odd color and / or markings that could be felt in the dark or by blind folks was a safety measure --lots of folks and small children could not read in the old days , so symbols like the skull and cross bone were used to warn them (danger) -- also in the old days there were many patent medicenes that one might take in the middle of the night ( take a swig of it in the dark then go back to bed ) for a cough or cold -- so poison bottles being odd shaped / sized /or having markings helped prevent accidentail poisonings

note the glass rod like the one shown by the bottle was often used to apply iodine or mercurochome * to a wounded cut or scrape area ( in 1919 imercurochrome's antiseptic properties was discovered by a doctor named young who was working at john hopkins hosptial)--- mercurochrome was highly popular being it was both effective and dirt cheap as well -- it was switch over from the "generally though as safe group" to the "untested group" by the FDA in 1998 due to their fear of potiential mercury poisioning --both iodine and mercurochrome can be deadly if drank in any real amount .

oddly however it has been used in the past as a "water purifation" device -- a drop per so much water ration to kill "germs" in water --some survival kits in the old days had iodine in it to use for wounds as well as to "purify" drinking water in "emergency" only type conditions
