The way it is corroded around it, that might just be gold. My thought is part of watch mechanism that was gold. Looking at the shell casings by it for comparison, it's too small to be a wedding ring.

I cleaned it up a bit and it def looks brand new gold lol… something this old brass would have some tarnishing of some sort..still no idea what it is but the gold continues into the piece but I’d have to destroy it to get inside.

Good call I wasn't being too observant there.

here is a recent example of a wick height adjuster knob that looked like this after brushing off flakes of surface debris.

I think it is brass......dont know what it is but it looks like a pocket watch but also looks like a side portion of an old fishing reel with a brass nut showing. I have dug brass that still has a dull sheen. View attachment 2026854
Could be brass, seen similar come from aerobic conditions.

I think Village has it right, the side plate from an old fishing reel. Possibly a gold plated ring on the "clicker" button. Not as old a reel as he shows, but some Abu Garcia reels did have gold plated trim.

Definitely has the look of old brass found in water/mud. It often comes out that bright gold-tone but it has more of a granular surface than gold would.

brass will come out clean in saltwater in some spots
depending on its content - if its mixed with copper - thats when you get green
ive gotten 100s of gold from Ct waters as well as brass items

Brass comes up looking as a gold in some cases. Thought I had a good one.
Just a headstamp.

Just to clarify your statement of content
Most brass is mainly made up of copper/zinc. (Pb=lead, Fe=iron)
Cartridge brass is known in the industry as 70/30( 70% copper/30% zinc ) same as a brass zipper pull, or a pocket watch brass.
Here are 30 some odd brass categories and when I was in the recycling of red metals the broker dealt with 85 categories of brass/copper. (probably broken down more since the XRF testing is used more)
