Went metal detecting in the woods for about an hour today. It was 22 degrees out, but it was nice and sunny. Only find was this vintage hatchet head with it's sheath. I found it about five inches down (first inch was frozen solid). Not a bad day at all...

Looking good! That one is in wonderful shape yet. I have found a couple but didn't keep them. I may keep the next one as a winter project.

I found this broad ax that I'm thinking of cleaning up. It was in a field next to my barn. May have been used when my barn was built.

Nice axe or hatchet

OldDude,

It is in very nice shape for a used hatchet. No damage to the poll at all. I'm thinking some guy lost it when it was almost new. Looks like it attached to his belt with the snaps on the sheath. Must have popped off when he snagged it on some branches. I'll bet he was mad when he got home!

Kodiak43351,

A little grinding with a wire wheel and citric acid might help that one. I use 2 ounces of the powder per gallon. You can buy it online or in any store that has canning supplies (Mason jars, etc.).

Works pretty good on rusty license plates as well. Here's some before and after pics I took of a plate I found last year. Not bad at all...
