Well after reading Herbie's (Steelhead will) posts the last few weeks, I decided I would give the sea shore a try and see if it worked for me. So I headed on down, first thing I dig is a little black disc. As I scratched it I saw that it was a merc. So right off the bat it started off good. Pretty soon I got another merc. Then dug a deep hole and out rolls a big round disc. I thought No way. And yes my first silver dollar a 1923 Peace dollar. :hello2: Wish it was in better shape anyone know of a way to clean up the dollar or the mercs? Dug some odds and ends. A bracelet and a ring. A belt buckle with the letter R on it. And a couple of old buttons. All in all it was a pretty cool afternoon.

Holy Silver Dollar! awesome!

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

If you don't care about value and just want em shiny like silver, then just take an eraser and rub the coin until its shiny like new.

There not worth anything anyway, just melt value, so I will give that a try. Thanks for the tip.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

no need to qualify that one, mainer.
sweet big silver!
now go find her older sister...

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

Awesome score on the Peace $, got one myself a month ago. It's worth more than melt if you clean it up, and, if anyone knows where they can buy silver dollars for close to melt, please let me know! ffd

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

I use Nevr-Dull to clean up silver and copper that have no value over melt.
http://www.nevrdull.com/index.html
You can get it at most hardware stores and even some larger supermarkets may carry it in the cleaning aisle.
It will not scratch your coins and cleaner is not harsh. No gloves needed.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

I normally reserve a hot peroxide treatment for copper, I wonder if it wound remove that outer coating of ????? ffd

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

Heck; as dry as it is here, I'd be happy with any of that!

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

Na , don't abrade it further with an eraser ! Get some Tarnex , remove the black without
degrading your surfaces . Argentium.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

All right Mainer. Not the prettiest but she will do.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

Did you try the eraser, If so I'd like to see the cleaned up photo's. ??? If not you need an Electrolysis machine http://gometaldetecting.com/electrolysis_cleaning.htm works great on blacked silver. :icon_thumleft: Be careful using this on copper coins or corroded metal the items may fall apart. :P Also don't do this to a valuable coin or a coin you think may have value. :icon_scratch: These are fun for the whole faimly and easy to build and use at home but.... :tongue3: Be careful and safe don't ever plug it in until your all set and everyone is safe, don't touch the ends when plugged in ever or touch them together. :headbang: Make sure the items don't touch each other too. :icon_thumleft: Kids :nono: make sure you ASK YOUR PARENTS or adult for help before you try this !! :help:

Keep @ it and HH !! ;D :D

PS: Tarnex is horrible it smells real bad that you can't get ride of and is bad for coins it strips the metal off the coin too.... :-\

Disclaimer: Do this at your own risk, I will not be responsible for anything that may go wrong, or if anyone gets hurt !!

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

Sweet big silver... Been decades since I dug a silver dollar. Definitely don't see those found too often anymore.

The ocean is a very powerful force. Always seems to provide a surprise. Did you find it in an area you have hunted before? Just wondering if Hurricane Earl last week played a part in making this find possible?

Congrats on the dollar. I kind of like the look of the silver from the ocean. Gives them character...

Good luck on your next hunt !!!
