Well after reading Herbie's (Steelhead will) posts the last few weeks, I decided I would give the sea shore a try and see if it worked for me. So I headed on down, first thing I dig is a little black disc. As I scratched it I saw that it was a merc. So right off the bat it started off good. Pretty soon I got another merc. Then dug a deep hole and out rolls a big round disc. I thought No way. And yes my first silver dollar a 1923 Peace dollar. :hello2: Wish it was in better shape anyone know of a way to clean up the dollar or the mercs? Dug some odds and ends. A bracelet and a ring. A belt buckle with the letter R on it. And a couple of old buttons. All in all it was a pretty cool afternoon.

Sweet big silver... Been decades since I dug a silver dollar. Definitely don't see those found too often anymore.

The ocean is a very powerful force. Always seems to provide a surprise. Did you find it in an area you have hunted before? Just wondering if Hurricane Earl last week played a part in making this find possible?

Congrats on the dollar. I kind of like the look of the silver from the ocean. Gives them character...

Good luck on your next hunt !!!

Brian in MA

Thanks Brian. It was in a place where there use to be an old dock. So nothing Earl brought in, we didnt get enough wind up here to blow out a candle.

Thanks Mainerelic. I found the same thing on silver that had been in the ocean. Thats why I didnt want to try the electro. I may end up just leaving it as is. :dontknow: :icon_thumright:

Nice job Mainer, Hey that aint so bad at all. I have never found one, so thats a keeper in my book! You had better luck than me in the pit today. Two ash pits and it got to dark to finish the 10 footer we started. Nice Dollar buddy, Congrats. jgas

A silver dollar is a silver dollar even if it ain`t purdy. WTG :icon_thumright:

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

It took me near 10 years to find a 50 cents... I declare you the winner.

wait a sec, an 8 reale is a silver dollar.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

I would leave it just as is as well. If you do want to get the black off I would go to a coin shop and get a bottle of "Pro Dip" or what ever brand they may have. About 5 bucks and made for the job.

WooHoo way to go Mainer. I think those Peace dollars are beautiful coins.

Can't wait to see what she looks like if you try to clean her up a bit.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

The black tarnish is likely silver oxide, common in saltwater coins I hear. Try finding what the silver coins on the Atocha looked like before electrolosis treatment.

If you want quick treatment, and don't mind the tiny scratches it will leave (no worse than it already is IMO), try rubbing the surfaces lightly with baking soda and a little water to make a watery paste. Acts like a mild abrasive, and gives a "whizzed" appearance to the coin, but will get rid of a lot of corrosion quickly, too. The coin collector in me says keep it like it is, but the realist says use baking soda. Up to you.

Congratulations on the Mercs and Peace. Try the baking soda past on the merc first: should tell you whether you want to chance it on the Peace or not.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

Just goes to show that Mainer leaves no stone unturned :notworthy: Wat to go on the Peace. Beautiful coin. A little darker that I remembered :icon_scratch: but still a nice find. Practice on the Mercs and see how they do. Nice finds I bet it was fun.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

Finds like this are as rare as hens teeth--and in fact, folks are just about as likely to find a cache of silver dollars as they are to find one single one. I have been VERY lucky in that I've dug one (back in '93), and I've also been on a hunt to see one dug (January, 2009). That is a quality find there. Truly, silver dollars are the Kings of coins to dig. Even gold shows up almost as frequently. When they were lost, they were searched for--and generally found.

Cheers,

Buckles

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

Thanks guys for the kind words. I always hoped I would dig a silver dollar. Actually thought I would dig an 8 reale at one of my colonial sites, before I got the chance to dig a U.S. Silver dollar.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

looks good to me.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

It's in a good shape if cleaned properly. I usually place a silver coin in a lemon juice (plastic/glass container) between 2 little ferrous objects (like clean nails). This method is a mild home electrosis. But it should be monitored closely and the coin should be taken out often/very gently rubbed with cotton bud and flipped to its other side. After it is cleaned, it should be rinsed very thoroughly with distilled water. Worked for me for salty soil/water finds but it's at your own responsibility. You'd better first practice with something more common than big silver.

Re: Not the best one but my first silver dollar

:icon_thumright: It seems like searching in the mud banks has it's rewards !! Nice Peace dollar find 8)
