Greetings friends,
Snow on the ground and 15 degrees out with more snow on the way.
Looks like the field hunting is over for a while. That makes the wife happy--She gave me a honeydo list.
Well here are my recent finds from farm field sites here in northern Illinois.
The bent up silver spoon commemorates the first dormitory for women at NIU.
The Horse button is backmarked Wadhams and co.. Early 1800s I think.
The large cents, two cent piece, and tokens spent some time in the rock tumbler to make them readable.
Thanks for looking and best luck to all, Merf

Okay, my jaw just hit the floor - those are great finds. I mean, jeez large cents, 2 center, indians, buckles, buttons, and a kiss me token? Is there anything else? I especially like the pictures of the coins in the ground, gets me all geeked to get back out there. That Vaquero must be a slick machine - eh?

Ian

Thanks Ian  It is not so much the machine as it is finding the good spots where the old farmhouses were.

Nice finds Merf,

You had a real nice big copper yr. You have some nice maps and fields to hunt. I seen you post one time you used a small amount of vinegar in your tumbler. I tried it and got some nice results. Thanks for leaving that tip in a prior post.

HH Jer

Thanks Jer  That makes 24 large coppers for the year.
The two best spots were found by luck and a little research.

Is that an old school bell without the handle?

Thanks Rodger  I am not sure what the bell was used for.
I have found 2 others that are the same design but smaller.

Thanks Halfdime, Stormfighter, and AL

Merf,
Fantastic finds buddy. That 2 cent is in great shape. :icon_king: You got a lot of nice buttons there with some back marks I haven't seen. I think I may have a match to the flower button. :icon_scratch: Thanks for posting the thumb wheel on that lantern piece. I think it's neat to see the dates on those. Mine always seem to be in the 1890's.
Super post with some awesome finds & pictures.
Can you try to clear that snow out by next week, before I head up to Northern Indiana? :tongue3: :icon_jokercolor:
Good luck on the honey-do list.

My buddy HB found a bell like that on a previous hunt here in KY. We thought it was made of tombac.

By the way--nice Jacksonian button too! :)

As always great finds Merf.

I don't care what the token says I'm not kissing you....You may have to go to the local senior home to find the person that gave that token out....just watch out for the denture adhesive. I would hate to see you get stuck. :love3: LOL :violent1:

NJ

Thanks NJ ---Those kiss tokens were given as prizes at the fair [early 1900s]
They had kissing booths. The very pretty girls got a dollar.

Thanks Dan, RTDE, and Auforme

WOW,

Absolutely amazing finds, the spoon is very neat, I wonder if the kissing token can still be used?

Open up the museum now Merf...Nice digs all the way around. That 2 center is one of the best I have seen. Even the oil lamp part is in great shape. Cool stuff and let us all hope the winter in the midwest will be short. jgas

My Friend,

You have made some Wonderful recoveries--and documented them with some beautiful photos. November was a slow month for us, due to the weather and the holidays--but it looks like you've done very well.

This will be a post that I will look at several more times in the coming weeks. There is nothing like hunting those wide open fields, is there?

:)

Bravo.

Regards,

Buckles

Thanks Buckles ---I have found some good spots and had some good luck.

Regards---Merf
