Nice ! It's called a Counter Stamp.
May have been done by a Person with their initials, Or a Business.

More likely a Business.
Reasons too many to speculate.

I'm also guessing this was not a dig ?

I'd say the letters are close to the age of the coin.

Reason being to do that to a nice old coin like that would Ruin it's value.
Unless it was done back then. when the value was 1/2 Cent

Around that period of time there remained a shortage of US coins. Counterfeits were there. This might have been a merchant guaranteeing the authenticity.
