On my last beach expedition, I found an odd looking blob that looked like worm eaten wood. After sever days in the sun, It is kind of rubbery. It is a brown color, light and dark areas. I suspect it is whale "flem" which use to bring a good price. Anyone up on this subject? It is about basketball size. Frank

a picture would help, if you can post one

Mmmm...whale flem.

Get your grill good and hot, fillet it in 1" slabs, sear until lightly blackened and sprinkle with some salt and pepper. Yummy!!! :icon_pale:

Don't laugh. This substance has also been used historically as a flavouring for food, and some people consider it an aphrodisiac. During the Middle Ages, Europeans used ambergris as a medication for headaches, colds, epilepsy, and other ailments. :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:

Does it look like any of these photos?

If it is ambergis, you may well have found something worth many times its weight in gold. That is, if it is of high quality and is legal to sell in your location.

cut off a small piece and see if it's flammable.

Digg, It looks like the chunk that gray haired lady is holding in front of her. It's about 13" long by 7" wide and 4" high. It is kind of sticky. I am heavy into a cache hunt, but I will post a picture after I get back. I thought it was used to hold the fragrance in perfume. It has almost no smell of it's own. It weighs a tad over 6# I wonder what's it's worth. Anyone know any buyers? Frank

PS: -It doesn't burn, it boils into a liquid.
-It compresses like cork, but cork burns.

365, Thanks for the address. I sent them an E Mail. Frank

Jeepers, there really IS a market for everything, huh?! Anyone have any leads on who'd want a large batch of belly button lint hair? :laughing7: :tongue3: How about some fresh, moist toe jam??

Hay you guys , listen to this. The co. that buys this stuff requested pictures. If they think it looks like "Ambergris" (whale flem) they want a 3 gram sample. If it proves out, they send a man to examine it and make an offer, cash on the spot. Now listen!!! the co. is in France!!!. The guy that said it was like gold is right. I have a 6# chunk. Maybe there is more to treasure hunting than I ever imangined. Maybe Irene was nice to me. A gold chain, now this. Frank

I CAN'T SEE IT! Can you possibly make it a little bit bigger so me and anyone else having vision problems can see it also?

Thanks! :hello: :hello:

nicest blob of whale flem I have ever seen ! hope it works out for you

There are a lot of (ifs) in treasure hunting.
--If they think it looks like ambergris
--if the sample checks out
--if it checks out with the inspector
--if it is the right quality
But to tell you the truth for 50 big ones it will be worth it, but then again in reality it is chasing the dream, and that to me is what life is all about. Frank

Whale flem is whole alot of money because it's so rare.

Ambergris can fetch between $20-$65 a gram, The Age newspaper reported on Wednesday. That would make the Wrights' find worth at least

$295,000.

Used in perfumes by ancient Egyptians and mythologized in literary classics like Herman Melville's "Moby Dick," ambergris is spewed out of the intestines of sperm whales.

Now for the sad news. They said it is some type of excretion, but not ambergris. I guess that is what you call, breaks of the game. On to my cache hunt. I am on location now. Frank

Frank,

Your blob must have come out the other end.
