William Hanscomb's first cabin was located in what is now a city park in the center of Okanogan, Wa. The coins were not buried here, where Salmon Creek runs into the Okanogan River. The Salmon Creek Road runs in a NW direction out of Okanogan toward the Conconully Reservoir for a distance of about 28 miles. He was arrested at his "squatters cabin" about 19 miles up the road.

It may be difficult to locate the site of his cabin to search for the coins. A modern detector could return a nice prize if the coins could be found. The coins could be worth more than twenty times their face value at today's prices.

three of us were invited to dredge the Okanogan river 2 years ago up above the dam. this man had access from his back yard and we tought him how to dredge. we gave him everything we dredged up. we found a fair amount of fine gold in the couple of hours we were there. we all had fun in any event! we also dredged the Similkamin (sp) river for a couple of days and did much better! we had a great time and really want to go back soon!
