old button

This very old steel button, along with a steel for striking flint was found at the same site. Also found nearby (last year) was a brass butt plate from a North West Trader Rifle, which was stolen from my house last year. My guess as to the date is around 1800.

Awesome finds!! too bad about the butt plate being stolen How old exactly is this steel button? Surprised it didnt rust, usually steel and iron do that after being in the ground a long time, did you check it with a magnet? Do you know what the design on the button mean? its very nice

No, just the eyelet for attaching it to what ever. The back is basically a flat disk with no marking.

It appears to be a lamp with a flame on the top. In between there appears to be a flower - some one I showed it to said it appeared to be a thistle flower. The same person suggested it might be of Scottish origin.
