A couple weeks ago I found a 1909 S Wheatie but no VDB on back...today I went back to the old Catholic school established in 1890 and found a 1901 Barber dime with no "S"!! Looks like she's been through a fire but should clean up nice. Talk about getting the heart all pumped up again.

But it's nice to know there's still an old silver coin or two to be found amongst all the ruins and trash that remains.

Here's a couple pics of the coin uncleaned. Tomorrow I'll try to post a couple after cleaning pics.

That silver is beautiful just like that! No key date... go ahead and clean it. WTG! TTC

looks good to me. But I thought that all those coins out in CA are S mint marks!?

Thanks Terry and Bob!!

And don't worry, Bob, that Barber will come along soon enough. Since I got my Silver uMax in November I've scored lots of Mercs, silver Rosies, silver rings and pendants and spoons, but only two Barber dimes.

But then again I haven't really done much "new" research in the past 8 months either. Just hitting most of the same old spots over and over.

Hey TNetters...help me out!

I originally did not think there was a mintmark on this coin, but after cleaning it (oh if only I had waited to use a big loop to check the coin) I think there may possibly be a very faint "S" mintmark.

Please look at this scan and give me your opinion.

I didn't get any responses to my query last night so I took the coin to work today and used a magnifying loop to check the reverse, and sure enough the coin has an "S" mintmark but it is very, very faint, almost too far gone to see.

Less than 500,000 of these were struck, which makes this a key date coin! My first key date silver, that is, if my SLQ actually turns out to be a 1916 and not a 1917, but I doubt it will.

Don't you think if it had an S you would see it clear as day in that scan.

Nice find,

Keep @ it and HH!!

Ray, there is still a lot of great detail on your dime around where the mintmark would be. Not sure why I wouldn't be able to see it in your large scan if it was there. :icon_scratch: If you say it's there, I believe you, but I can't make it out in your scan. I do see a blackened curvy marking in the area of the mintmark, but I think that is just an anomaly. Here's a pic of an "S" mint barber that I found with slightly less detail than yours, and the mintmark is easily identified.

Cool find...if it were mine I would be hitting it with the tin foil electrolysis method!

Well Dan, it is quite possible that it's just an anamoly. But under the loop it sure looks like a very weak outline of an "S". The lower bracketed serif on the type even seems visible. Could it be a weak strike?

What say others?

ok, this seems as good a place to ask as any since the term was used here. what is a key date coin?

It usually is the lowest mintage coin of the yearly issue.

Switch to negative mode. No mintmark visable.

Congrats, Those old barber dimes are always a treat to find; Continued Success and HH.

Man, you guys are bursting my bubble on the mintmark!! LOL

I wonder if it would cost anything to send it in to get checked just to be sure.

Thanks for the comments!

Ray

I don't see any S. Still, a really nice coin that I haven't found yet.
