Reading the posts today and wondering about old dump sites. I thought old glass bottles were mostly what you find at dump sites. I see he found a couple of coins and other things. The buttons make sense. They probably threw away old clothes. I never knew you could find coins at those sites. All the old homes dumped their stuff close by. Usually at the edge of the woods. There were no public dumps back then. I know where at least three of them are, but was never interested in digging there. Have you Guys found other things besides old bottles at these sites? And also, seems the newer stuff would be on top?

To answer this with the fewest words possible, honestly, use your imagination of what might be thrown in there and it is very possible to be found there. Toys, car parts, marbles, silver spoons, compacts, rings, gold chain, depression glass, oil cans, insulators... Just a fast quick example of this that i have found lately... Id say, go for it!! Just need a four prong rake if they are family dump sites... Good luck, let us know when you go!

The way I look at it if it was made, it was thrown out at sometime down the road. The only thing that is gone is the organics, most wood, and thin metal like cans will disappear in older dumps also. Found lots of things besides bottles and knowing what I know today I would dug differently a lot of the dumps as it was focused more on the bottle recovery and not too much on the relics.

Owning a sanitation company and entering a public dump daily I see everything to include cash thrown away. Usually on accident, but still there.

Old dump sites are treasure troves. You will find much more than just glass bottles. I've searched both new and old dump sites, both contain treasures if you know how to spot them and have the time to invest in really looking.

If you run across piles of clothes that were thrown out check em with a detector. You may be pleasantly surprised at what gets left in pockets of even the stuff that is almost rotted away. Buttons too! How many of us have walked by a pile never giving it a second thought.

I found a bunch of unbroken Noritake China with gold trim at one of the very first old dumps I stumbled across. You will soon find out where a lot of antiques come from and how something that was mass produced in it's day is now rare today.

Dumps can be some of the most interesting places to hunt. But make sure you wear gloves, and have an updated tetanus shot.
Like said folks can throw away items that they forgot about.

The dump at my farm (been there since the late 1700's) would be like going back through time if someone wanted to dig it up. You name it, it's probably there.
Heck I've had multiple dowsers tell me that there was silver and diamonds at two spots in it. Figure Gram or one of her ancestors tossed out some jewelry by accident.

I found a big silver necklace and cross at the only dump I have detected. Mostly larger metal items, old pans--I'm sure there are more cool relics. The cross and chain were made by the Catholic church--apothecary silver or something--don't know the age, but the coins I have found near the foundation date back as far as 1832--the timeline that Henry Thoreau came through Concord which is where I found the coin. good luck and HH

I dug several farm dumps back in the late 1970's. One memorable find was a perfect pair of bifocals with gold frame, German inscription on them. Unfortunately, they "walked off on their own" sometime back in the '80's.
