PICS INCLUDED BELOW!!

old foundation we came across in the woods. As you know my dad works for the railroad and sees this kind of stuff all the time, but neither of us have any idea what these structures are. Do You?!?! It's in the woods and obviously looks VERY old... Any advice on what to do with a site like this besides hunt every square inch of it?!

I have FULL permission for this site and the house which was built in the early 1800's. I'm just thinking the foundation might hold more coins, relics, etc but who knows. You think its worth taking the concrete top off of the structure in the picture? Oh and bomber, it went fine just 4 hours community service, wasn't that serious bra.....

glad to hear, good luck and hh ;D

The large item looks like a bridge pier to me. Could it have been used to level a section of RR track, or carry it across a flood plain? I would expect then, to see other piers, or piles of rubble, in a linear path. What is that pile of rocks in the upper right (background) of the last photo? It reminds me of the bridge abutment here:

yes , that looks like a very good place, dig everything, go slow, and go deep, even check the surrounding areas there may be stuff around the area, can't wait to see what you will find, that looks like a very old site, very old, cool pics, good luck, let us know,

cant wait to see what you find from there ! looks like a great site ;)

Looks just like the smokehouse we had while I was growing up - they're usually made of stone or concrete and used to smoke and preserve meats for the winter months.

This last picture looks like old bridge. Might be bottles in the back fill around it or maybe fisherman dropped something around there. I'd be more interest in where it leads to, got to be an interesting old site on one side or the other. Come get me north of Evansville, I'll help ya work the site. ;)

Looks like the foundation to an old grindmill or bridge to me. Could have been a mill as said with a wheel in the middle of the stucture. That would account for the structure having a gap in the middle...or of course, it was a bridge. Was one or the other I am sure.

I can see a railroad in the background of photos #2 & #3, And does appear to be the remains of a watertower and other RR buildings and loading dock. Good luck. Ed

The smaller concrete cubes look like some I have seen at an old army base. They held the wooden stringers for the floors of barracks and office buildings. Could be a dormitory for the railroad.

I agree that the stone structure in the water had a water wheel in the center.

I didn't see any signs of water, but that does look like what it is. I def. think it has something to do with the railroad because its a few feet of the tracks, but I DID SEE some old stairs laying off to the side that were all broken up. I'm j/w why there are so many concrete structures and an old house across the way. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR OPINIONS. I'll keep this thread updated with hunt pics.

I think I may have caused some confusion when I included the photo of the old bridge to illustrate what I thought I was seeing in grogmug's pics. The old snowy bridge photo was not one of his, but the rocks in the background of his last photo reminded me of this old bridge abutment. I think he may have the remains of an old RR bridge spanning a piece of sloping ground and perhaps a drainage area/flood plane.

The more I read your replies the more my excitement builds to get back out there. I like the research SOMEGUY, now any suggestions on what to do with a site like this.

I figured that you would say it has been since about 30 minutes before the Fiesta Bowl Started!
