The barn is circa 1920's, but I think the piece is older :dontknow:

Maybe a decorative or ceremonial item? As the end piece is very sharp and could accidentally hurt someone.

I'll bet it was probably used for special occaisions and parties. They were not so concerned with safety and law suits back then.

Thrilla, I was thinking, the fact that this punch ladle doesn't have a maker's mark might be a good thing. It suggests it wasn't mass produced and could possibly be unique. It looks like a perfect candidate for "Antiques Roadshow" also.

Somebody's taken a lot of time and effort to make this, it looks 1800s to me :P

Does anyone know how to get in contact with the Antiques Roadshow?

That's a awesome-looking ladle

As far as it's age, it looks old by the ornateness. . . but I'm no expert. Even though
your site only dates from the 1920's, this could have been a family heirloom
that's been passed down for many generations.

Out of curiosity, was this a dug piece?

If you found this ladle underground and just lightly rinsed it off to clean,
it looks (from your photo) it might have some gold plating on it(?)
Almost all the brass or bronze relics I've dug are most often quite a bit
darker. But then again, it could be just the soil conditions where I usually hunt.

Google "Antiques Roadshow". Once you're at their site, there should be a list of their
"specialists" that normally appear on the show along with their personal website
contact information. (There was a year-or-two ago).

Very nice piece!

watercolor,

Not dug....but found in a trash pile in a dusty old barn that is about to be demolished. Thanks for the Roadshow info.

trader,

If it goes back to the Spanish here in Texas then it really IS old.
