I've never been into button collecting, other than the ones I find. However I've seen enough of them while trying to help others ID their finds that I couldn't help myself when I spotted an old Atlas mason jar a little over half full of buttons many of which looked like old military buttons.

Here's what I wound up with.

How did I do?

You did well, buttons are a whole hobby in themselves.

Well I guess it depends on how much you paid? $100 & you did bad...lol

Nothing in there pre-1900, only ones that I'm not sure on are the 4 at the top left(Rampant Lions), that maybe Finland???

I still have a lot to ID, but I'm pretty sure these are silver.

Great stash of cool buttons. $20.00 ain't bad in my view. If you find them interesting and enjoy doing the research on your "finds" then it's great therapy. If you made a profit on the purchase then it's a bonus. Very cool. Thanks for sharing. BTW, I also have a small hoard of buttons around here somewhere similar to yours. Now I will have to locate them and see what I have.:laughing7:

That's an OK price, the silvers one's are cool. (I agree they look silver)

Any backmarks on the rampant Lion ones I mentioned?

Great buy! Nice gilt on the eagle buttons! Now that only filled half a mason jar?? Looks like that would fill a gallon milk jug!

Negative, and I was thinking leopard instead of lion due to the spots but I still am not sure those aren't just fashion buttons. I've found I can ID the designs fairly easy, but I'm not real sure, other than a steel back, to tell if they are new or old when there were buttons with blank backs back then too.

I agree that these particular ones are not old enough to be anything more than reenactment buttons but short of buying a book that will surely cost more than my whole pile of buttons is worth, it's anyone's guess. I just like to be sure before I pass something on.
