Found a 925 ear ring and sterling ring yesterday in the wood chips. This morning found a mans ring that reads gold on MDer and is not magnetic. This ring has no markings and the center spins. I worked the front of the old high school (now a middle school) for about 4 1/2 hours also and found a 1917 merc at about 11" or 12", also three old deep wheats, 1911,1919 and 1937S.It turned out to be a fun day. Thanks for looking!!

Yes get out there, just take care of filling holes and leaving it as you found it! It's a free country you are allowed to go to a public park and enjoy yourself. I will add the best places to look in my experience are private yards. Get permission and you will get GREAT finds almost all of my old nice coins are from private yards and very few are from parks.
I found this early 1900's city park in my town. It's in this declining neighborhood with the big victorian type homes. The current park is now just a large triangular stretch of mowed lawn with some playground equipment. I have metal detected near the tree lne with no "historic" (just clad coins) finds, but I have been a little nervous to venture out into the open area. There are no full-time grounds keepers. So, if I had trouble it would probably be a cop passing by. Do you ever detect in highly visible public areas?
