I bought a beautiful 8.94 ctrl opal, but the cut is too deep to mount. It's almost 9 mm deep and having a hard time finding a setting. Can it be cut thinner say 6 mm without ruining it?

I'm missing some info here..
What kind of opal is it? Where is it from?

One alternative is to make a setting. A 8+ cts opal may well be worth a custom setting.

Because you say, "thick", I assume it is a double sided cabochon?
You cut those to save weight -- because weight adds value.

If there is no play of colour on the backside -- it might be possible to reduce thickness.
