What do you suppose this thin copper plate was used for originally? It was folded completely in half when I dug it up at a local beach. I straightened it out. there are 3 tiny, brad sized holes that I think were used to attach it to wood? Maybe an edge adornment for a fancy trunk or jewelry box?

Great ID, gunsil.

Gloria Sunburst

Used pre civil war by military.

USMC West Point circa 1851 - 1878 (dates may refer to the shako hat or ensignia on sunburst, not quite sure)

Sunburst 2.webp

"RARE ORIGINAL PRE CIVIL WAR U.S .1840's-1860's MILITIA SHAKO SUNBURST FRONT PLATE "
and modern hats with the gloria sunburst as a common accessory that can be chosen from a list.
Used alone, or with school emblems, initials, logos, etc. Think this applies to OP's and would explain the holes.

Wow, that's a bit unexpected! How can I tell the age of this thing? Civil war era would be extremely cool, One off a modern marching band members hat......not so much.
